Folks, My current motor is B840 (old one). Looks like B2840 is a direct replacement. Is it just a matter of swapping out the motor - no additional parts necessary? Thanks, Andy

Hi Andy, Yes the B2840 is a direct replacement for your B840 Motor. Whenever you replace a pool pump motor we recommend a tune-up kit. Could you send us a few photos of your pump and motor? Please take a close up shot of the motor label as well as a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation for your tune-up kit.

What's the difference between B2840 and B2843? Can I use either one for my WF-30 2.5 HP? I have no idea between energy efficient vs standard efficiency. Could you let me know which one is better and why?
 Reply

A  Answered on 5/22/2020 by InyoPools Product Specialist Hector F.

Both the B2840 and the B2843 have the same total horsepower however the B2843 uses slightly less amperage making it a more energy-efficient motor.

It seems B2843 has 2 HP, not 2.5 HP. Can you please check? Also, which one do you recommend for whisperflo WF-30 2.5 HP? B2840 or B2843?

I guess my motor is broken because it makes really loud whining noise when it runs. Can you help me which one I need to buy? I have whisperflow (WF-30), but my current motor is B2748. They have different HP. one for 2 HP, and the other is for 2.5 HP. It seems either B2843 or B2840 is right one, but I am not sure whether I need to buy B2748. Please help me. Thx
 Reply

A  Answered on 12/3/2020 by InyoPools Product Specialist Hector F.

Hello, you can actually use either the B2748 or the B2840 as they both have the same total horsepower. It can be confusing based on the way the manufacturer labels these. Here is a guide that we put together called "How To Understand True Pump Horsepower - Up Rated vs Full Rated" that better explains.

This is the correct replacement and in order to locate the correct seal kit, we will need the model name or number of the front pump housing that the motor attaches to. If you cannot locate that information please send images to upload@inyopools.com so we can review and further advise.

Hi, I have a Jandy Stealth Pump SHPM2.0, SN: M07FF2120. I'd like to upgrade it to a 2.5HP (uprated). I believe I can use the following: B840 motor, R0807200 impeller. Is this correct? If so, what shaft seal should be used? Also, I believe I can re-use the same diffuser, correct?
 Reply

A  Answered on 8/21/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi. That is correct, this B2840 motor, and Impeller Kit - R0807200 is correct. I would recommend replacing the Diffuser Kit - R0445400 since you are replacing the Impeller along with the Pump Shaft Seal - R0479400. You should only make this upgrade once you've confirmed that your system can handle the increased water flow.

Thanks, now I know the correct motor. I also just received a very helpful video from INYO showing step by step how to replace the motor. That is really useful!! I now also know that I need to buy a Go-Kit so that I have new gaskets and o-rings. I checked your site and I cannot locate one for a Waterways pump. It's a SVL66 unit. Do you have one?

A  Answered on 6/27/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Matt S.

The Waterway SVL does not have a gasket kit, so you would need to buy the gaskets individually.

Yes, this would be a compatible replacement motor for your original Whisperflo pump model and we recommend replacing the seals and gaskets as well. For your pump that would be either the GOKIT32 or the GOKIT32SALT for a saltwater pool.

Will this motor replace the motor on a PEAAXSSG-184 Max-E-Glass Sta-Rite pool pump? I use the pump for a shellfish hatchery and it is crucial that the internal metal parts be stainless steel thus the "SS" in the model number. Copper or bronze parts are toxic to the shellfish. Thanks.

Hi, Rick. This Century B840 motor can be used as a replacement. The Stainless steel parts are for the pump assembly, not the motor.

The seal kits are dependent on the model of the front pump housing that the motor bolts to. You can call in to cross reference that or you can email us that information and even images here.

I purchased the motor March 2015. This morning the motor quitted and did not start after turning the switch. The capacitor appears to work fine. Is there anything I should do? What is the warranty coverage for the unit? Thanks!
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/9/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Alan M.

All motors we sell are warranted for one year. You can try removing the motor from the housing to see if debris is jamming the impeller. You can also inspect between the motor and the motor mounting plate for corrosion on the face (metallic front) of the motor. This would indicate the pump/shaft seal failed. This water damage (if present) would have damaged the bearing in the motor. Replacing the bearings would be another option to repair the motor. Here are a couple of links that may help you with this problem: How To Determine Why a Motor Won't Start or Shuts Off and How To Replace AO Smith Motor Parts - Overview.

Hi there, I have a Jandy Stealth SHPM2.5-2 2 speed pump & motor. I just wanted to check and see if this is the correct replacement motor and inquire which is the correct tune up kit. The pump tries to turn on (makes the initial noise) and shuts off almost immediately, breaker does not trip. Thanks!
 Reply

A  Answered on 10/5/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Andy O.

Hello Albert- The A.O. Smith 2.5 HP, 56Y Frame, Up-Rate Motor (B840, B2840) B840 is the correct replacement motor. There is not tune up kit for this pump, but to determine the correct shaft seal it would be determined by the serial number on your pump. The Shaft Seal OEM (R0445500) is used on Stealth Pumps with Serial #'s of P08FF0001 and earlier. Models with serial numbers later than that would use Shaft Seal (R0479400) OEM.

Whisperflo-30: my current motor is a B855 (2 HP) but the pump is a 2.5 HP and this seems like it is the right one. I had a home warranty when they replaced the last one. How long is ground transportation?

A  Answered on 8/22/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Alan M.

Hello David, yes the A.O. Smith 2.5 HP, 56Y Frame, Up-Rate Motor (B840, B2840) is the correct replacement motor for the WF-30 Whisperflo Pump. I would also recommend replacing your seals with the Tune Up Kit Pentair/Purex Whisperflo - GOKIT32. The tune up kit contains all o-rings and the shaft seal for your pump.

The problem is, none of the motors on this web site match the pump model #. Do you think this motor will work on my pump, also would it be better to pay the extra $40 and get the energy efficient model. Thx for your help.

Hi John, The B840 is the correct replacement motor for the CHII-N1-2 1/2 AE pump. You can use the B843 as an energy efficient replacement, the EE motor will definitely pay for itself and make up the difference.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.
