What size natural gas line should be used on a Raypak 406,000 BTU heater?
 Reply

A  Answered on 6/11/2006 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

The 406,000 uses a minimum of 1" natural gas line and this would be if your run of pipe is 20 feet or less.  If your run of gas pipe is 21' - 95' you would require 1 1/4" pipe and if your run is between 96' and 215' you would require 1 1/2" gas pipe.

Will a gas heater operate at the low speed of a dual speed motor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/16/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Probably not - Most gas heater will shut off at low GPM levels (20-40) to keep the heater cores from overheating - 20 for 200 BTUs, 40 for 400 BTUs. Depending on your pool system you might get these GPM levels at the low speed but generally these heaters must be run at the motor's high speed.

What is the difference between an Electronic and Millivolt ignition?
 Reply

A  Answered on 10/10/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

The basic answer is that Millivolt is the old style of ignition, using a standing pilot light. While the electronic ignition uses a spark start system like a gas grill. Electronic ignitions are more efficient in gas usage and also are better suited for high wind areas where a pilot light might get extinguished.

Hi Sam, Yes the gas line requirements for the 406K Raypak heater is larger than the smaller Raypak heaters. Here is the gas supply line requirements for this heater, if the distance from gas valve to heater is 0' - 20' then you will need a 1" gas line, 21' - 95' requires a 1-1/4" gas line and 96' - 225' requires a 1-1/2" gas line.

Hi Dennis, Since you have a salt water pool I would recommend the Raypak Heater 406,000 BTU's NG ELE W/ Cupro-Nickel Heat Exchanger,  it will heat your pool faster than any other models and will last longer due to the Cupro-Nickel heat exchanger in the salt water environment. A Clear Check Valve 2" - 1/2 lb. w/ Unions or Clear Check Valve 1.5" - 1/2 lb. w/ Unions would also be recommended depending on your pipe size.

Hi Danny, yes this heater would be large enough for your pool. If you are in California your local code may require that you use a Raypak Low Nox Heater also if you are above 2,000' you would need a Raypak High Altitude Heater. One final thought...if you have an existing gas line you will need to make sure that it is large enough to support a 406,000 BTU heater, here is the Pool Heater Gas Line Sizing Chart which will help you determine the gas line you will require.

Brian, Unfortunately, I do not have measurements of your heater to confirm. The heater can be installed indoors but you will need to purcase a draft hood to do so. You can view dimensions of the heater here: http://images.inyopools.com/cloud/documents/rpseries-technical-data.pdf

when you refer to a salt water pool, what exactly do you mean? I have a pool that has a chlorine generator that uses salt but i'm thinking that's something different. However after 5 years of use my 406A- EN-C is completely rusted inside. Should it have been installed with the copper/nickel unit instead just copper?

Hi, Gerald. A saltwater pool is considered a pool that uses a system that converts the salt in the water to chlorine. Yes, I'll recommend that you replace your unit or the heat exchanger with the cupro-nickel model P-R406A-EN-X

Good afternoon, the Raypak Raypak RP2100 Heater 406,000 BTU NG ELE part number 009219 would be a great switch from a Jandy 400. The install should be pretty simple. With call Natural Gas heaters we would recommend you check with the installer or gas company that both units use the same sized gas line.

Does the R406A have a diverted valve?
 Reply

A  Answered on 10/26/2021 by InyoPools Product Specialist Rich N.

Hi James, it does have a Unitherm Governor but no diverter valve.  The Unitherm Governor helps reduce condensation from low inlet water temperatures as it automatically regulates the water flow to help keep the water temperature in the heat exchanger above 105°F. Both water temperature and water flow rate are controlled to eliminate condensation, sooting, and scale build-up that can shorten heater life.
 Reply

?     Asked on 10/27/2021by JAMES FLANEGAN

Do any of your heaters have a diverter valve? I understand that a diverter valve is the preferred method of delaying heat exchanger failure. Thank-you for your follow-up.
 Reply

A  Answered on 10/27/2021 by InyoPools Product Specialist Rich N.

Hi James, the heaters do not come with diverter valves installed but we recommend adding them to give you the option to lower or eliminate the flow to the heater.  This is necessary in case you need to change your pool water to a more aggressive profile or service the heater.   Just use our overview on How To Set Up Pool Diverter Valves as a guide.

 Reply

A  Answered on 11/9/2021 by InyoPools Product Specialist Rich N.

Hi Mike, these heaters should be drained in preparation for freezing conditions.  Per Page 9 of the manual: 1. Turn off gas valve, manual gas valve, and electrical supply to the heater. 2. Open drain plug located on the inlet/outlet header, (under the water pipes). Remove the heat exchanger inspection panel on the side opposite water piping to gain access to the drain plug on the return header. Open drain plug on return header.

Hi Chas, the Raypak RP2100 Digital Heater - R406A - Copper - Natural Gas would be an excellent replacement for your old LJ400N heater.  You might want to get the Raypak RP2100 Digital Heater - R406A - Cupro-Nickel if you have a saltwater pool, as the cupro-nickel heat exchanger tolerates the water chemistry a bit better (it will also be fine for a freshwater pool).

What is the difference between Raypak 406A-EN-C listed as digital and the 406A-EN-C listed as millivolt?
 Reply

A  Answered on 3/24/2022 by InyoPools Product Specialist Rich N.

Hi Tom.  The millivolt heaters do not require an external power source to operate and always have a pilot light lit. The control is usually a knob to adjust the desired temperature.  The digital units require a power line to operate and usually have more sophisticated controls and an LED display for more precise temperature control.  See our article on Differences in Swimming Pool Heaters for a more comprehensive list of the pros and cons for each type.
