Hi, I'd like to know the correct motor/s part to replace my current one (Please see photos attached). Besides, is the replacement over this motor simple as only unbolting the 4 screws on the housing plus hooking up electrical wires? Are there also different choices of motors, like higher hp.. also fits my replacement AND with the same simple installation? Thanks!

Hi Kim, You would actually require the B2853 Replacement Motor along with a Pentair Super Flo Tune-Up Kit. The replacement is pretty easy and we have put together this Video on How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor which will show you how to tackle the project.

The correct motor replacement for your motor model 177474 is the B847. If the front pump housing is in good condition then most homeowners just replace the motor and seals. If it is in bad condition then please call in and a tech can discuss some options with you.

I have a Centurion pump 168454 I have looked it up and it says it is a 1.5 HP the sticker on the pump says 2hp can you clarify?
 Reply

A  Answered on 5/15/2018 by InyoPools Product Specialist Charlie R.

Dan, To calculate the total horsepower the motor has, you have to multiply the horsepower (HP) by the service factor (SF) rating on the motor label. In this case, the hp is 1.5 and the sf is 1.5 (1.5 x 1.5) equals 2.25 HP. So, actually, this motor pushes a little over 2hp.

A  Answered on 9/15/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Scott W.

If you have the incorrect shaft seal or if the shaft seal is not installed correctly it could cause the shaft not to turn. If the shaft spins with nothing on it, it is not the motor.

My pump is running but is very loud, and running hot. THink it's a bad bearing. Which is the best option: 1. Replace Bearings 2. Replace Motor only, and if so, which part is needed for WhisperFlow WF-26 / PN 011773 1.5 HP Model 177475. Also, would you recommend replacing the seal plate as well, since the noise does have a rhythm to it. 3. Replace the entire pump unit (not just the motor)
 Reply

A  Answered on 9/12/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Megan C.

I best recommend replacing the Motor B854 and Tune-up kit. You may need to replace the Impeller and Diffuser if you are hearing some type of rhythm. If the pump is 10-years old or greater I would invest in a new pump, the Whisperflo Pump 1 1/2 HP - WF-26 may be found by clicking here.

Replaced 177476 (doesn't show HP/SF on label) with USQ1152 shows HP of 1.5 and SF 1.1 from pool store at their recommendation. I have a WhisperFlo pump shows HP of 1.5/SF 1.47.The motor keeps overheating and shuts down. Pool store offers various reasons. Lastly they replaced motor "must be bad" New motor does same thing. In reading it seems this is the wrong pump. THP for this needs 2.2 THP not 1.65 on this pump. Is it possible this is why the motor is shutting down? Very costly-two motors now.

Also, when it first would not start up, I flipped the switch many times and it started. Worked a few days then would not start. again. Replaced DPST switch and tried. Same problem. Would the run capacitor cause the motor not to turn on? Thanks

Hi Ry, A bad capacitor can cause the problem you're experiencing. If you get us the specs off of the capacitor we can locate the correct replacement to see if that will get the motor operational again. If that does not work then you will have to replace the motor which the B858 will work.

The 2 HP and 1.1 SF is shown on the Pentair WF-28 model label above the motor label. An old AO Smith document shows the part number 177476 as a B858 but the Pentair specs would indicate it should be a B859. Do I currently have a full rate motor? Is this the correct replacement pump or do I need the B859?

What is the difference between a full rate motor and one that has a service factor. Is a motor that has a service factor of 1.5 actually a smaller HP motor and the service factor bring it up to the stated HP or is it actually a bigger motor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 6/7/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi K. Schebera, The difference between a full rate and an up rate is the service factor. Full rate motors has a higher service factor and a higher total hp than what it's rated for while up rate motor has a lower service factor and are rated at rated hp. Yes, a motor with a S.F. of 1.5  will have a higher total hp so it will be bigger.

I have a Challenger 8-168454-25 motor with a bad capacitor. The original capacitor was replaced by our pool service and I suspect it is not the correct rating for the motor. What is the correct PN for the capacitor?

Hi, RAF, The 8-168454-25 motor uses the 30MFD 370 V Run Capacitor (5VR0303).

The back cover of my motor housing has broken off. The plastic peace that attaches to the motor with a screw is broken. Also the motor is very noisy. It is still working fine.

Hi Hipolito, If the cap screw is broken of into the motor and can not be extracted and the loud noise indicated that the bearings are going bad in that motor you would be better off replacing the entire motor.

Need to replace Pentair pump motor #355393S. Is this correct replacement part?
 Reply

A  Answered on 7/21/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Matt S.

The 355393S is an energy efficient 1.5 HP full rated motor; the correct motor replacement is the B842 made by AO Smith. The B858 would work, but it is a standard efficiency meaning it would cost more to run.

I need to replace the motor on a Pentair Whisperflo WF-6 1 1/2 HP pump. The current motor part # is 8-177476-20. Can you confirm that the B2858 is the correct replacement?

Yes the B2858 is the correct replacement motor.

What is the difference between the SQ1152 and the B2858? I have an old pac fab challenger pump and have always bought the SQ1152 as a replacement but this seems to say that the B2858 should be used. The only real difference seems to be the frame 56Y vs 48Y. Not sure what that is. From the picture the pumps look the same. The SQ1152 is cheaper so that would be my first choice unless the B2858 is a much better pump.

Hi Bill the main difference between these motor is the frame as you have noted. The 56Y frame motor has a larger barrel (i.e. it is a wider motor) and the 48Y has a narrow barrel. Both motors can be used interchangeably as there is a rubber spacer which comes with the motor which allows for either type of motor to be installed on your pump. If you have been using the SQ1152 motor then I would stay with the SQ1152 motor as you won't need to worry about using the spacer. The performance of both motors would be exactly the same.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?

Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.
