What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
 Reply

A  Answered on 2/16/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

What is the difference between the SQ1152 and the B2858? I have an old pac fab challenger pump and have always bought the SQ1152 as a replacement but this seems to say that the B2858 should be used. The only real difference seems to be the frame 56Y vs 48Y. Not sure what that is. From the picture the pumps look the same. The SQ1152 is cheaper so that would be my first choice unless the B2858 is a much better pump.
 Reply

A  Answered on 6/9/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Bill the main difference between these motor is the frame as you have noted. The 56Y frame motor has a larger barrel (i.e. it is a wider motor) and the 48Y has a narrow barrel. Both motors can be used interchangeably as there is a rubber spacer which comes with the motor which allows for either type of motor to be installed on your pump. If you have been using the SQ1152 motor then I would stay with the SQ1152 motor as you won't need to worry about using the spacer. The performance of both motors would be exactly the same.

The 355393S is an energy efficient 1.5 HP full rated motor; the correct motor replacement is the B842 made by AO Smith. The B858 would work, but it is a standard efficiency meaning it would cost more to run.

What is the difference between a full rate motor and one that has a service factor. Is a motor that has a service factor of 1.5 actually a smaller HP motor and the service factor bring it up to the stated HP or is it actually a bigger motor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 6/7/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi K. Schebera, The difference between a full rate and an up rate is the service factor. Full rate motors has a higher service factor and a higher total hp than what it's rated for while up rate motor has a lower service factor and are rated at rated hp. Yes, a motor with a S.F. of 1.5  will have a higher total hp so it will be bigger.

The 2 HP and 1.1 SF is shown on the Pentair WF-28 model label above the motor label. Hi Ry, A bad capacitor can cause the problem you're experiencing. If you get us the specs off of the capacitor we can locate the correct replacement to see if that will get the motor operational again. If that does not work then you will have to replace the motor which the B858 will work.

Also, would you recommend replacing the seal plate as well, since the noise does have a rhythm to it. 3. Replace the entire pump unit (not just the motor)

If you have the incorrect shaft seal or if the shaft seal is not installed correctly it could cause the shaft not to turn. If the shaft spins with nothing on it, it is not the motor.

Dan, To calculate the total horsepower the motor has, you have to multiply the horsepower (HP) by the service factor (SF) rating on the motor label. In this case, the hp is 1.5 and the sf is 1.5 (1.5 x 1.5) equals 2.25 HP. So, actually, this motor pushes a little over 2hp.

Hi, I'd like to know the correct motor/s part to replace my current one (Please see photos attached). Besides, is the replacement over this motor simple as only unbolting the 4 screws on the housing plus hooking up electrical wires? Are there also different choices of motors, like higher hp.. also fits my replacement AND with the same simple installation? Thanks!

A  Answered on 5/6/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Kim, You would actually require the B2853 Replacement Motor along with a Pentair Super Flo Tune-Up Kit. The replacement is pretty easy and we have put together this Video on How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor which will show you how to tackle the project.

I don't know the history on who installed this motor but on the tag you will notice it says 48Y so I wanted to check again with you guys to make sure this is the correct motor and that I will have all the parts needed. Thank you again

Hi Scott, Thanks for the photos those are helpful! The motor that is currently on your pump SQ1152 is a replacement motor and was not the original motor on the pump. The SQ1152 is a 48 Frame motor which has a little narrower diameter as you can see there is a little bit of a gap between the bottom of the black motor and the motor mounting foot. The 56 Frame motor listed on this page is the original motor that came with your pump and would sit flush on the motor mounting foot. We would suggest this B858 as the proper replacement.

Hi Paul, yes these motors do have the bonding lug and are located beneath the rear cap on the motor. These are usually required to be attached per local code but you may want to double-check with your local code.

I have a Pentair WhisperFlo with a motor that is model BPA450V1. It is really noisy still even after replacing the motor bearings. The pump is supposed to be a quiet pump, but even after replacing the motor bearings, its still just as loud as before. Is this the correct replacement motor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 7/9/2021 by InyoPools Product Specialist Craig C.

Hello Aaron.  The Century Motors model B2858 is a Full Rate motor with a Total Horse Power (THP) of 2.25.  Your current motor model BPA450V1 has a THP of 1.65.  The Century Motors model B2854 is a more exact replacement and has a THP of 1.65.  It is recommended that the motor shaft seal, seal plate gasket, and diffuser o-ring be replaced at the same time.  The GOKIT 32 contains these parts.  When replacing the motor please check the impeller for wear or obstruction.  An out of balance or obstructed impeller can result in significant noise.  Century 1.5 HP Square Flange 56Y Up Rate Motor - B2854    Tune Up Kit Pentair/Purex Whisperflo - GOKIT32
