What is Service Factor?

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to find a replacement motor for my pool pump but my model number doesn't match what you have listed as the model number. My model number begins with a C48 and yours begins with an SP. Please help.

What we have listed on our chart pages is the pump model number. The model number you have will just identify the motor. If you look on the plastic housing on the pump there should be a sticker which will have the pump model number. You can usually find this by the discharge port on the pump. Once you locate it you can choose the correct replacement motor. Be certain to change the shaft seal and gaskets as needed. You can use our >How to guide if you need help.

I have a Century Centurion produced usn1152 pool pump motor, but I need to replace the bearings. For some reason I can't find the bearing sizes. Any help?

Hello Chris - The USN1152 requires one 203 bearing and one 304 bearing.

Hello, Rudi. The part# A.O.Smith SP1610-Z-1-MXBK references to the USN1152 A.O. Smith 1 1/2 HP Up Rated Northstar Replacement Motor. The Shaft-Seal will need to be replaced too. Keep in mind Hayward manufactured two North-Star pumps. You will need to verify the which model you have to correctly identify the Shaft-Seal needed. The easiest way to identify your pump model is by examining the Strainer Cover (Pump Lid) for a molded part number. What is the difference in a 1 speed vs 2 speed motor? I have a Hayward Northstar

A single speed motor runs a constant speed all the time. A dual speed or two speed motor has a high and low speed. The option allows you enjoy energy savings when running the motor on the lower speed setting.

I have a A.O. Smith Part # 7 - 187630 - 02 Serial # CB06-16.
It simply stopped running, now will power on but hums loudly.
It is a good 10 years old so thinking replacing the pump would be best.
What is the direct replacement for it please?

I have this pump motor on my hayward northstar pump. The motor is controlled by an Aqualogic system. Do you know if this motor can be converted to dual or multi-speed, and if so would that be a complicated change for my aqua logic? I was also thinking the dual speed controls might be independent of the Aqualogic controls. Thanks for your help.

Hi, Paul. You can convert your single speed pump to a dual speed pump using the SPX1610Z2MNS motor. The SPX1610Z2MNS motor will have to be controlled by the AquaLogic controller.

this is the correct motor (1.5 horse), what I'm looking for is a replacement wire cover and the wire connection board it protects. both have sun damage and the board is broken away from the clamp screws. If available what is the part numbers? Thanks

Hi, Chris. The Back Cover for this motor is Part #18906802 and the Terminal Board is Part #18907201. We can special order these parts which can take a couple weeks.

I have a 1.5hp Hayward pump (7-187630-02) in which I replaced the starter capacitor with a capacitor of the same specs a couple of months ago. Today I turned the pump off to do some cleaning of the equipment and when I turned it back on a loud pop sound occurred at the back of the motor. I thought it might be the new capacitor failing up when I took the motor cover off I noticed a burnt wire and a melted terminal block at one of the terminals. Is it worth while replacing the terminal block?

Hi Paul, At this point, my suggestion would be to replace the entire motor with the USN1152 motor as I think at this point you will be investing too much into reviving a dying motor. If you do want to the order the terminal board then we could special order this item for you and the part # is 18907201 however my suggestion would be a completely new motor.

so i have a northstar SP1605-Z-1-BNSC. i swear on the motor it says its a 1/2 hp but what i see here is a 1.5 hp is that right and will my pump housing fit the new style? also i live in Ca and all i want to do is get this up and running do i need the dual speed?

I have a 1hp B228SE Century motor that I need to replace. Can I upgrade to this 1.5hp motor or should I stick with the 1hp? It appears it would fit my existing Super Pump. Thanks for any help.
Hi Wes, If you wanted to upgrade to 1.5 HP you can do so, you will need this 1.5 HP Super Pump Motor this Hayward Super Pump Seal Kit and this Hayward 1.5 HP Super Pump Impeller

The Century 1.5 HP Full Rate NorthStar Replacement Motor - SN1152 is the more appropriate replacement for your SP1615-z-1-BNSC. Be sure to get a new motor shaft seal as well - use this Pump Shaft Seal, 5/8", Viton - PS-3890 for pumps made after 2003 or this Pump Seal, Extra Heavy Duty PS4280 (Saltwater Pools) for saltwater pools for pumps made after 2003.

I need to replace the motor on my Hayward Northstar model SP4010X15. Would this be the correct unit? And what else would you replace? Seals,o rings etc. we are a saltwater pool. Thanks Anthony
The Century PART # USN1152 with Pump Seal SPX1600Z2 Seal Plate O-Ring SPX4000T Diffuser O-Ring SPX4000Z1 and Lubricant LUBE-PP The pump was manufactured in January 2002, you may consider replacing the whole pump with the Hayward TriStar 1 1/2 HP, Max Rated Pump - W3SP3210X15 as the North Star has completed the 10-year life span and many of the important parts impeller & diffuser are discontinued. Please note the motor and pump listed are not California Title 20 Compliant.
