How To Correct a Noisy Pump

This guide discusses the common causes a noisy pump and how to correct them.

Step 1

Improper Pump mounting - If the pump is vibrating, it need to be bolted down to the mounting pad.

Step 2

Cavitation/ Air leak - An air leak in the suction line can generate air in the pump which leads to load cavitation (air in the upper part of the strainer basket). Cavitaion can also be generated when the discharge line has less resistance (e.g. larger pipe diameter) than the suction line. You may have to throttle the discharge line.

Step 3

Worn impeller - The thread on the impeller may have worn to where the impeller is wobbling and rubbing on the inside of the diffuser. Replace the impeller and possibly the diffuser.

Step 4

Bad bearings - One of the most common sources of motor noise. When the bearings get wet or worn, they will generate a loud squeal until they fail. A common cause of bearing failure is a worn shaft seal that sprays water onto the motor and its bearings. Replace the shaft seal when you replace a motor.

CHARLES scire - I'd reinstall the motor. The vents are intended to cool the motor and to drain any moisture that might collect around the inside of the motor. With the vents up, they let water in with nowhere for it to drain out.

What happens if the pump is installedd with vent cover at rear of pump facing the top of pump . motor installed upside down, operation normal.

remove impeller - The impeller should twist off the shaft with a counter- clockwise rotation. You will have to secure the motor shaft first. See our guide on "How To Replace A Pool Pump Impeller" for more information. Note: some impellers also have a set screw that has to be removed before you can twist the impeller off.
