The Dolphin Advantage Robotic Pool Cleaner is self-contained and fully automatic. Just drop it in your pool, turn it on and leave it for about 5 hours. It computes a path to maximize cleaning and even climbs the walls to scrub and vacuum the entire pool floor, walls and waterline. This guide shows your how easy a Maytronics Dolphin Cleaner is to operate.

Step by Step

Step 1

One of your first steps in operating a Dolphin Pool Cleaner is to set the diagonal handle. This handle must be changed at the beginning of each cleaning cycle to optimize cleaning and minimize twist in the cable. There are four possible handle positions that control the programmed motion of the pool cleaner. If the handle was on position 1 or 2 on your last cleaning cycle, change the handle position to 3 or 4 for this cleaning cycle. If the last cleaning cycle was set at 3 or 4 , set the handle at 1 or 2. To set the handle, press down on handle clip and position the end of handle in one of the four slots shown at left. Repeat on other side to position the handle diagonally across the top.

Step 2

Position 1 - fast waterline sideways movement left.

Step 3

Position 2 - slow waterline sideways movement left.

Step 4

Position 3 - slow waterline sideways movement right.

Step 5

Position 4 - fast waterline sideways movement right.

Step 6

The blue Power cord is stored coiled. If the cord is twisted from storage or previous use, take the twist out of the cord for best operation.

Step 7

To remove twist, stretch the cord out and flip it counterclock-wise or clockwise as needed.

Step 8

Connect the power cord to the power supply by removing the cap and then pushing and twisting the cord plug onto the power supply recepticle.

Step 9

Plug the power supply into a nearby power outlet. See instructions on the bottom of the power supply to verify power requirements - usually 120V in US. Make sure the power supply is at least 10' from the edge of the pool.

Step 10

Place the Dolphin Cleaner in the pool and rotate it from side to side to release trapped air.

Step 11

Let the Dolphin Cleaner settle to the bottom of the pool.

Step 12

Step 13

The Dolphin Cleaner will crawl along the floor using a self-learning program to optimize cleaning of your pool.

Step 14

When the Dolphin Pool Cleaner comes to a wall, it will square up to the wall and climb it to the surface. At the surface it will either move sideways cleaning the waterline or drop back to the bottom to resume cleaning the pool floor.

Step 15

If the Dolphin Pool Cleaner does not climb the wall, check the filter bag. It may be too heavy and need to be emptied. Also check for debris caught between the track and wheels.

Step 16

The Dolphin Cleaner will operate for 5 hrs then will perform an automatic shut-off. The Cleaner can remain in the pool until you are ready to pull it out. Many people run the cleaner at night and take it out in the morning.

Step 17

To retrieve the Dolphin Pool Cleaner, TURN OFF THE POWER and slowly pull the Cleaner up to the surface with the power cord.

Step 18

To remove the Dolphin Cleaner, pull the Pool Cleaner to the pool's edge, grab the handle, turn the Cleaner 90 degrees, and pull the Cleaner up out of the water. Do not pull the Pool Cleaner up by its power cord.

Step 19

Rest the Dolphin Cleaner on its side to let the water drain out.

Step 20

Store the Pool Cleaner in an area that is out of the direct sun and where the temperature stays above 41 degrees. Place the Cleaner on its side so that its weight does not flatten the brushes.

Our vacuum stopped working. The power comes on but the vacuum doesn’t move. We took it somewhere to be looked at and they said the motor was burned up because water got to the motor. Could this be from the vacuum continuously being removed from The pool by the power cord instead of the handle?

It is a possibility, but there is also a possibility it was caused by a poorly sealed joint on the motor case. Or, the cleaner could be old, and the motor just failed because it was just its time.

New to pools - It is highly unlikely that you would have damaged your dolphin cleaner by running it for 2 seconds out of water. You should be alright.

Hi, I accidentally ran my dolphin before it was in the pool for 2 seconds. Will it impact the motor? How much time does it take for the motor to over heat?

Recently someone gifted us a Dolphin Deluxe 4. I am wondering if it was used on a previous pool do I need to do anything (like resetting it) so it will map our pool? Or will it do it automatically?

dottie - You may have air trapped in the top of the cleaner. As you are placing the cleaner in the water, swish it back and forth to release any air trapped in the top of the cleaner. Also, there are many models of Maytronics Dolphins cleaners. Your model may be one that has floats attached to the handle. Look at this list of cleaner parts, scroll down to your Maytronic Dolphin model, and click it for a parts list. See if your model should have floats that may be missing.

My dolphin flips over on its back when it climbs the walls. It doesn't seem to matter rather it has dirty or just cleaned bag. It lays there belly up running for a few minutes then shuts down.

xbombero - Sounds like a good idea, but I'm not aware of any timer control past 24 hours.

 Posted: 6/12/2016

Can a day timer be added to the Z5 Dolphin?
Would like it to operate every other day when not home.

I have this model of Dolphin - since 2005! This is the 3rd pool that this little jewel has been cleaning and I am so pleased with the longevity and performance. Worth every penny we paid!

Chakka1 - See steps 6 and 7 of this guide. Stretch the cord out in a straight line and rotate/flip it left or right depending on how it's coiled until the coil is out. You might leave it in the sun for a couple of hours to bake the straight line in.

Love this cleaner, does a super job in my pool. One little problem with the cord twisting. what is the best way to wrap or store the cord or untwist it?

InyoPools Product Specialist  Posted: 5/9/2015

Larry - Check the cleaner's impeller to make sure the blades or shaft are not broken. See if the impeller moves during operation. See our guide on "How to replace a Dolphin Advantage Impeller" for more information.

I love my little guy. Works so well.

Tracy - Most dolphins are made for in ground pools and are too abrasive for above ground pools. There are a couple of smaller robotic cleaners that are made for above ground pools like Pool Rover Jr. Robotic Pool Cleaner. If a robotic cleaner can be used in an above ground pool, the description will generally state that.

 Posted: 3/22/2015

Can you use the dolphin in an above ground pool?

InyoPools Product Specialist  Posted: 11/2/2013

Floating Cleaner - Generally, when your cleaner floats on top of the water, it has air trapped in the top of the cleaner. Try swishing the cleaner back and forth while you have it just under the water. This should release the trapped air.

had my dx5plus june 2013 now i put it in and it wont go to bottom of pool stays on top of water and fan comes on 3 times just floating on top of pool then shut down. can any one tell me whats going on?

InyoPools Product Specialist  Posted: 2/11/2013

wc - The manufacturer recommends that you only operate your Dolphin above 41 degrees.

 Posted: 2/9/2013

I am thrilled with the performance of my dolphin. I have had it a year. This time of year the water is very cold. We live on the west coast so we do not have snow but an occasional frost. Does the temperature of the water stop the dolphin from working? I have found that sometimes it will start to work then stop. Most of the time it will not work. I am hoping as the water warms to 65 it will then work. Has anyone had this problem?

InyoPools Product Specialist  Posted: 7/20/2012

Luke - I would suggest calling Maytronics on this one. Their number is 888-365-7446.

 Posted: 7/19/2012

My dolphin for sum reason cuts off after running 10 mins or so. Upon resetting (turning off the power and restarting) it will run another 10 mins then shut off. Anyone knows why this is happening and how to resolve.

Buying a dolphin pool cleaner today

 Posted: 7/16/2011

The Dolphin Robotic Pool Cleaner was the best investment we ever made. It is so impressive sometimes we just sit and watch it work. Our neighbors have asked to borrow it on several occasions because they kept buying other types of pool cleaners. Finally they bought a Dolphin and are thrilled. We highly recommend this pool cleaner.
