What makes the contactor stay on. When I push the button in the middle the lights come on, but as soon as I release the button in the middle, the lights go off. I can't seem to get the switch to stay on by it's self.

Hello Harold - Inside the contactor is a coil and a switching contact. As the voltage is applied to the coil, the contact is pulled in and allows the main voltage supply to travel through the contactor. It sounds like the contactor needs to be replaced. If it is a new contactor, you will need to contact the manufacturer for further assistance.
