Hi Kelly, This straight pipe holder also called a dummy cell is used for several scenarios which we have listed below. Winter: It is suggested that in areas of the country that you close your pool for the winter that you replace your normal cell with this dummy cell, the reason being is that the standard cell is expensive and by removing the standard cell you will prolong the cell's life. Cell Cleaning: When you remove your normal cell for cleaning it is nice to have the dummy cell as you can replace the normal cell with the dummy cell so you continue to filter your pool while you clean your cell. Spring Start-Up: The dummy cell is great to use during spring start-up as quite often the pool can be quite dirty and you don't want large dirt and debris to get lodged in your standard salt cell.
