Millivolt vs. electronic pros and cons?

Hi Suzanne, here is a blog that we put together called "Differences in Swimming Pool Heaters" where we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both.

Are there any suggested time limits for running the heater on it’s highest heat setting. I’m running it on high for about four hours then turn it down to the medium range. Will this cause any problems? Thanks for a great product.

Hi, Jeffrey. There are no issues with operating the heater at intermittent temperatures.

What is the difference between the Millivolt and the natural heater?
Reply
Hi, Terry. Millivolt is a type of pilot that is constantly lit powering the unit. Natural gas refers to the type of gas used to operate the unit. Millivolt units are available in natural gas and propane. For more info, check out the Differences in Swimming Pool Heaters Blog.

Dear Sirs, Yesterday I ordered this heater (266a) from you. I live in Texas, do I need the Texas code add on, part #012011, flow switch and t & p guage?
Reply
Hi, Jeffrey. That item is only used with ASME units which are for commercial applications. It is not compatible with the unit you purchased.

I have a RP2100, which I believe is the 266 KBTU model, but it only has 1/2" line. This one appears to require a 3/4". Is that right? Maybe I have enough pressure to make up the smaller diameter? Or am I missing something?
Reply
Hi, RS. The gas line connection to the unit needs to be 3/4", that does not pertain to the actual pipe size.
Reply
what size of pipe is the natural gas connection on the Raypak 266000 BTU ng mv PR266AMN? Do you provide nipples and unions for the gas connection?
Reply
You will have to check with your gas installer. It will depend on the run from the meter to the unit. We do not provide any hardware for the gas connections.

can we reverse the water manifold to the opposite side.
(from the right side to the left side)
thank you

Hi Roger, The water connection can be reversed in the field. The reversal and installation has to be done by a pool professional or an authorized Raypak installer or else the warranty will be voided.

I just purchased a Raypak Millivolt heater from you to replace my old Millivolt heater. I have a separate Jandy control system to turn on/off the heater for pool and spa modes. I don't see a wiring diagram for the Millivolt in the O&M manual as to how a Jandy system would be inter-connected. Can you point me in the right direction?

Hi Eric, MV units can not be controlled or wired to an external controller

Is the Raypak PR226AMN a cupro-nickel heater?
Reply
The Raypak 009193 (PR266AMN) is not a cupro-nickel heater. The cupro-nickel is only available in the digital model which is a Raypak 010103 (PR2266AENX): http://www.inyopools.com/Products/04000013058201.htm

What is the difference between an Electronic and Millivolt ignition?
Reply
The basic answer is that Millivolt is the old style of ignition, using a standing pilot light. While the electronic ignition uses a spark start system like a gas grill. Electronic ignitions are more efficient in gas usage and also are better suited for high wind areas where a pilot light might get extinguished.

Will a gas heater operate at the low speed of a dual speed motor?
Reply
Probably not - Most gas heater will shut off at low GPM levels (20-40) to keep the heater cores from overheating - 20 for 200 BTUs, 40 for 400 BTUs. Depending on your pool system you might get these GPM levels at the low speed but generally these heaters must be run at the motor's high speed.

Due to covid19 hard to get a pro to install. So I did it myself. This replaced my old versa gold 156, so the gas line simple had to be attached and tested.
The pvc was a little time consuming because I decided to add three cut off valves. I did this thru experience with the old versa. Chemicals, ph, alkalinity are the main reasons for damage to the heater. My thinking is that I’ll only use the heater possible four months out of the year so why run all the chemicals thru the heater when I don,t have to.
Hooked everything, it started right up, and is heating the pool as I write this. My wife likes a very warm pool at least 88 degrees. In Texas during the summer we put frozen jugs of water in to cool it. But in April the water is about 68 degrees. This heater is great.

Replaced the heater with the same brand and type. It was easy to remove the old and install the new. A plumber checked the connections and we are ready for the end of the season and the next season opener in 2019.
The hardest part was twisting the old black pipe off and then I had it replaced with new pipe to the new heater.

Pros: Old Ray Pak lasted over 16 years (many hard winters)
Cons: none
Nicer than my 16 year old RayPak that needed to be replaced. This one has no rust headers and fewer items than need attention when winterizing. INYO had the best price for my pool heater. Delivery was quick without hassles. This milivolt model works great with no electrical lines required.
