Replacing the seal is a good idea as you take a pool pump apart for repair. This is a part that seals the motor/impeller assembly to the pump body. The seal itself makes the assembly a tight fit, so a lot of approved gasket type lubricant is recommended for use on all mating parts as you put the sections back together.

It is an o ring. Just use lube and clean out the pump cavity also.
