What is Total Alkalinity?

Total Alkalinity is a measure of the "buffering capacity" of water, or its ability to resist a change in pH. Low Total Alkalinity can cause: etching of pool plaster, corrosion of metal parts, staining of the pool surfaces, etc. High Total Alkalinity can cause cloudy water, burning of eyes, chlorine being ineffective, etc.

The ideal range for Alkalinity is 80-120 ppm. The swimming pool should be tested at least 1-2 times per week.
