I have heard of people using pool shock to sanitize drinking water but I can not promote the use of any pool shock for this purpose. You will want to contact the NSF for further information.

I was told that I could use a non-chlorine shock even if I am using chlorine tabs in my swimming pool. Is that true?

A non-chlorine shock is great for oxidizing the water which helps the chlorine work better. Non-chlorine shock is typically used in spas that use bromine and in chlorine based pools as a "shock and swim" meaning you can shock the pool with the non-chlorine shock and swim 15 minutes later.

Pros: Easy to use, fast working, swimming with in 30 minutes.
Cons: only comes in 1 pound bags not bulk.
We started using this product two years ago - works better than anticipated. We use this in our pools 1x per week for normal use, 2x if we have a lot of pool use (more than 6 persons, 3 - 4 x per week) - we have a chlorine tab feeder on our sand filter, and use this for shock so we do not over do the buffering in the water, maintains clear and beautiful water all summer (TX heat can be a challenge!!) Makes the chlorine tabs much more effective and easy to maintain 2 - 4ppm chlorine in pool. Our old chlorine shock would raise the buffering too high and be a lot less effective against algae bloom. This product "oxidizes" the water and kills algae and bacteria.
