I am replacing a 24" sand filter operating from a Hayward 1HP Super Pump. My pool is an in-ground that holds 35000 gallons. Will the C1200 filter (1.5" pipe) be adequate for this pool which is lightly used?
 Reply

A  Answered on 4/23/2013 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Yes this would be a proper fit for your pool. The Hayward Super Pump (1HP) would not be able to exceed the flow capacity of the C1200 allowing it to be a proper and safe fit for your system.

The filter I had before needed to be backwashed. How do I backwash this Hayward C1200 or C12002?
 Reply

A  Answered on 9/16/2014 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

This filter model type is a cartridge filter and does not actually need to be "backwashed". The filter cartridge element inside must removed on a regular basis which is on average about every month, rinsed down with a water hose and pressure nozzle of some sort and then put back into place.

Are there specs on how many microns this filter is rated at? Is there available another filter that won't allow finer particles to pass through?
 Reply

A  Answered on 10/1/2014 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

As a rule, sand filters sift particles ranging from 20 to 40 microns in size.  Cartridge filters can sift particles as small as 10 to 20 microns in size.  DE filters can sift contaminants as small as 1 to 3 microns in size. This makes DE filtration at least five to six times more efficient than sand filtration systems.

When my pump comes on, the top section of the filter body raises about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch. Then after running for a while, the "O" ring pops out, causing a massive leak. I replaced the "O" ring but to no avail. I have a model C1200 Hayward filter. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
 Reply

A  Answered on 6/22/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Dennis R.

Hi Ed, it sounds like the top section of the filter body is not screwed down far enough. Make sure that the cartridge is the correct size and that it is seated all the way down when you place it in the tank. Clear out any debris that may be in the bottom fo the tank. Make sure the groove where the two section of the tank connect is clear. If your O-ring is stretched from popping out, you may have to replace it.

Hi..... Is the C1200 big enough for a 25,000 gallon pool? Thanks!
 Reply

A  Answered on 7/8/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Dennis R.

Hi Joe, The real question is "Will the C1200 filter be compatible with my pool pump?". The filter has to be able to handle the GPM water flow that is generated by the pool pump. The GPM rating for the C1200 filter is 120 GPM which will handle most pumps up to 2  HP. Most 25,000 gallon pools have pumps with 1 1/2 to 2 HP. Bottom line, If your pool pump is 2 HP or less, the C1200 filter will be large enough for your pool.

Hi Ted, I would not recommend a C1200 with a 1 HP pump for efficiency especially if you had a D.E. filter. I would recommend the C17502 or C2002. The bigger the filter the better vacuum/suction performance.

Craig, For a 40,000 gallon pool, I would recommend at the least 225 sq ft if you are converting to a cartridge filter. A 1HP pump sould be sufficient if the total feet of head is within 50-60 feet.

We have an 18x36 with a 10' deep end and have a 1.5 hp pump and a 1hp back up pump (from a prior pool). What would be the best size filter for us?
 Reply

A  Answered on 6/5/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Jim, we would always suggest going bigger on your filter. A 2 HP pump on a C1200 would be on the very upper limits of what the C1200 filter could handle, so I would suggest the Hayward C17502 175 Sq. Ft. Filter as you will see longer life out of your pump motor and you will have longer time between cleaning the cartridge.

Hello, you would be fine going with this filter. When it comes to sizing a filter for a pool, you can typically never go too large. The reason for this is because if a filter is oversized, the water will be able to flow through at a slower rate and filter better.

You may not necessarily need to upgrade the filter but the advantage that you have is that you can dial down the rpm's on the pump decreasing that water pressure in the filter. If that pressure gauge is reading high(average 5-15 on a standard system) then you may want to consider upgrading that filter 50-75 sq ft.

Hi Michael, there are a few variables that need to be considered when sizing a pool filter. Here is a guide that we put together called "How To Size a Pool Filter" that should help with that.

Hi Dan, your existing super pump should be fine to use with a number of different filters.   There are a few variables that need to be considered when sizing a pool filter. Here is a guide that we put together called "How To Size a Pool Filter" that should help with that. The W3C1200 has 120 square feet of filtration and works well with smaller pools.

I'm needing a sanity check- replacing an old 36sqft Hayward Pro Grid DE Filter rated for 72gpm. Pump is a 1.5hp Super II, 16,000g pool with estimated 60ft head, so 69gpm. All lines are 1.5, so seems like that would limit me to 60gpm anyway. Wanting to get a cartridge filter, and this Star Clear Plus 120 with 1.5in ports seems more than capable for my system but so much smaller in dimensions to my existing filter that I'm worried I've missed something!

Hello Will.  Utilizing Hayward Cartridge Filter Design Flow Rate information and Super II Pump Performance Data, the Hayward Star Clear Plus 120 sq ft cartridge filter model W3C1200 is a compatible replacement cartridge filter for the Hayward ProGrid 36 sq ft DE Filter model DE3620.  The 1.5" pipe size limits the maximum flow rate to 60 GPM according to most resources.   The 60GPM flow rate is below both filter Design Flow Rates per Hayward published data.  Monitoring filter pressure will indicate the frequency with which the cartridge will necessitate cleaning.  You may wish to consider the Hayward Star Clear Plus 175 sq ft cartridge filter model W3C17502, reducing the cartridge cleaning frequency.  W3C17502
