When should I change the sand in my filter?

You should change the sand in your filter every 5-7 years. You can generally tell that it is time if your pool water is not as clear as it normally is or when you notice the interval between backwashes is shorter. You can use > this guide to walk you through it.

How often do I have to replace the sand in my filter? What is normal operating pressure?
 Reply

A  Answered on 3/1/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

On a "fresh start-up" a filter would operate anywhere between 10-20 psi. As a general rule of thumb you only want to backwash when the pressure increases 8-10 psi. You want to make certain that the pump is being turned off whenever you move the handle on the valve. Once backwashing is complete (3-5 minutes), you can switch to the rinse option to re-settle the sand bed. Sand will typically last 5-7 years. Premature backwashing will wear down the size of the sand which will cause difficulties such as cloudy water and higher operating pressures.

What are the waste and closed settings used for?
 Reply

A  Answered on 8/10/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Robert M.

The waste position can be used to drain water from the pool while bypassing the filter. The closed position is used when/if the pool is closed for the winter.

I have a 1HP Hayward superpump. Average 25 ft of head on return piping. Is a sand filter with a flow rating of 74 GPM large enough that i won't have problems with the pump being too powerful for the filter?

Hi Mike, Based on the info provided the S70T2 filter will be adequate, the Hayward Super Pump 1 HP will not be too powerful.

I need to see a picture of the top of the valve to see if it will work with my current plumbing. My old valve has backwash on the right, return on the back and the pump intake in the front.

Hello, would my 1 1/2 hp pump be too strong for this filter. My pool equipment is all 2" piping, no pool heater and equipment is about 35' away from pool. My in ground pool is 25,000 gallons and is about 6' deep.

Hi, David. If your pump exceeds a flow rate of 74 GPM, then it will be too strong. You will need to locate the pump performance curve for your specific pump.

Will this model be big enough for a 15' x 30' x 3-6' (15k gal) pool?
 Reply

Hello, This will be efficient the amount of water you have in the pool, however, you will need to check the gpm rating your pool pump has. You do not want blow the filter form having too large of a pool pump.

When sizing a pump to a sand filter is it a must to select a filter that can handle the max flow of the vs pump? What are the concerns with using a pump that flows more than the max filter capacity?
 Reply

A  Answered on 6/18/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Chris. It is important if for any reason the pump runs at it max speed, the filter will be able to handle it. If the filter is unable to handle the pump flow, the filter becomes ineffective.

We seem to have poor filtration on our 33K gallon in ground plaster pool. The Starite sand filter says "filtration 20 gallons per minute" but the flow meter shows 80Gpm. Could this be a problem? (2" pipes, short distance from pool, 1.5 HP pump.) 2 skimmers, the bottom drain was plugged up 2 years ago because of a leak. Never had issues until now. Water keeps turning green even with a high chlorine level. When 5 to 10 people go into the pool for one hour, I have to backwash. Thanks, Mike

If you put dial valve in recirculate position is the flow different? This position bypasses sand. You may need to take the top two inches of sand off the top of filter media. Have you had a complete water analysis? Phosphate levels?

Pentair makes a sand filter TR 140 what does the 140 stand for?
 Reply

A  Answered on 6/23/2021 by InyoPools Product Specialist Danny R.

I believe their initial purpose was to have the GPM as it matches the lower models.  But when it gets up to the TR140 it does not match the GPM (which is 106GPM).  So I think it really does not mean anything anymore.  It's just the part number.
