I need to replace my the capacitor on my 1.5HP pool pump. Do you carry the capacitor I need?

Please note that capacitors store an electric charge and should be handled with the utmost caution and care. We do not encourage handling a capacitor without any type of safety measures in place and highly recommend contacting a professional service company for repair/replacement. For those that feel comfortable changing the capacitor here's  >How to replace a pool pump capacitor. In order to match up the capacitor you will need more specifications on the capacitor. You will need to match the voltage, the MFD, whether or not the capacitor is a >run or >start type and the actual dimensions of the capacitor body.

Hi Mike, Your current capictor should have a MFD rating and a VAC rating on it, can you please email us those specifications as this will help us select the proper replacement capictor for you, thanks!

?     Asked on 4/28/2015by Michael

In response to the posted question and answer below- my MFD rating is 35 and the VAC is 370 - the only thing in question is the size. Mine is 2.875" long and 1.875" in diameter.

Hi Michael, I double checked the dimensions on this capicitor and it is 2" Wide x 4-5/16" Long. Since the MFD and VAC ratings are the same this would work for your application, the only question would be if it could fit inside your motor end cap.

Is the 3"x3"x2" dimensions only for the body of the capacitor, or does it include the envelope of the connection tabs as well? I need a 35-370 for a Hayward Northstar motor, but there is basically no space for anything even slightly larger.

Hi, The SP1620-7-Z-1-MNSC motor does show that it can use a 35 MFD 370V Run Capacitor based on the info we have from the manufacturer. In some cases, a higher capacitor can be used.

I have a 2 HP AO Smith (Whispeflo) motor and the capacitor just went out. It is a 35MFD 370 VAC capacitor. I have temporarily placed a 50MFD one in my pump motor so it will run for filtration and cleaning of my pool. Is that ok? Also you sell several different capacitors. Can I buy the 40 or 45 MFD capacitor and not damage motor and get better life/performance from motor or should I stick with the 35MFD ?
 Reply

A  Answered on 5/21/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Steve. It's okay to use a larger sized capacitor like the 50 MFD and it will not harm the motor. We do have a wide range of different size capacitor available. You'll be fine using the 50 MFD capacitor or if you want to put your mind at ease you can purchase the 35 MFD 370 VAC Capacitor.

Without  a specific motor model, part or catalog number, or a capacitor part number we would not be able to cross reference for you. If you cannot locate any of that then you can send in images of the capacitor stating all specs and dimensions of it through our support request page or you may need to take it to a local motor shop.

I am trouble-shooting a 1999 Sundance 850 Spa system. One of the motors just hums when asked to run. It turns freely by hand. I pulled the capacitor from the external hump on the motor and it seems to test bad on my multimeter. 2 Questions, please: 1) Is this a run or a start capacitor or both? 2) It is marked as a Magnetek 9845. 35uf 370 VAC 60hz 035864. Other numbers on it are 005-1479-RMF SU 60P68-2445 60P61-10 SA S1000AFC 175863-35. What capacitor do you have for replacement?

Hayward Northstar SP4000 or Hayward Northstar SP4000x I know specs are correct, size - not sure, but pretty close. Mine seems to be 2" in diameter and almost 3" height. I see the length of yours is smaller, which I guess is OK (housing is slightly longer), but the diameter worries me since it'll be loose in the housing (like a cradle around it). I'd prefer to have exact fit but if not, what can I use to secure it in place considering it gets very hot? Thanks

Hi We do show that this capacitor has been used on the Hayward Northstar Pumps and would be the correct capacitor for you.

I've been going through capacitors too often in my opinion. The pump is approximately 2.5 yrs old. I have been through 4 capacitors to date. Can you recommend one that may have more longevity? I have attached photos of the motor and existing functioning capacitor.

A  Answered on 11/1/2021 by InyoPools Product Specialist Rich N.

Hi Rich, there are a few different possibilities for this.  Your motor may have had the incorrect capacitor installed from the beginning (I do not have a cross-reference, so I cannot confirm what the correct one is) so you may be replacing it with the incorrect one.  If the motor runs lightly-loaded, also known as hot, it can cause high capacitor voltage, ultimately leading to failure. Light-loading or running hot can occur due to restrictions, such as a dirty filter or an air leak. Since you are having this problem repeatedly, it’s probably not the capacitor. The windings may be going bad in the motor, for whatever reason, or the bearings are going bad and it’s running hot. If this is the cause of your capacitor failures, then it is best to replace the whole motor.  Our article on Why is my pool pump motor capacitor failing? explains it better.
