The air tube is attached inside the filter to the air valve, if not installed on the filter when you bleed the air out of the tank, it may cause pressure build up and cause various issues with the filter and pipes. If the pressure builds up to much it can cause the filter to crack or even blow apart, you should always keep the filter is working order and to the specifications the manufacture requires.

Hi, Peter. The air tube acts as a vent to help remove air trapped in the filter and circulation system. There is a port that's located in the bottom of the filter that the tube slips into.

Hayward C-1200 Filter -
At the bottom is a un-screwable know which lets water out - do you have a hose
that can connect to this to let excess water out of my pool?

We do not, but you can take that knob to your local hardware store, purchase a standard garden hose spigot that matches that filter knob thread diameter, then replace the knob with it.

Hello Mau, this air tube just sits in a small hole on the bottom of the filter body in the Hayward Star-Clear model C1200 cartridge filter.
