I was told that you should never put the chlorine tablets in the skimmer, only in a floater. I have never used a floater in 11 years. Is this true? And if yes, why?

Placing chlorine tablets in the skimmer will cause the skimmer basket and pool pump to corrode prematurely due to the concentration of chlorine. I would recommend using either an automatic chlorinator or a chlorine floater in conjunction with slow dissolve chlorine tablets.

I just purchased a pool and was told I need to use chlorine tabs. I'm new to this, where do I put them?

Congrats on you new pool. You will want to purchase a chlorine floater or automatic chlorinator. This is where you would put the chlorine tabs to maintain a chlorine level in your pool.

Chlorine lock is a condition in your swimming pool when the chlorine levels ( free chlorine and total chlorine) are not the same which makes the chlorine useless. You can read more here.

There are several things that can cause a pool to turn green. You can use our How to Clean a Green Swimming Pool  guide for starters. Be certain to test the water and adjust the chemical levels.

What are chloramines?
 Reply

A  Answered on 12/20/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Chloramines are the result of chlorine molecules combining with ammonia and nitrogen in the water. Chloramines smell bad and cause skin and eye irritation. The presence of chloramines can be an indication that you have "chlorine-lock".

Can I use these tablets in a clorinator?
 Reply

A  Answered on 4/23/2018 by InyoPools Product Specialist Hector F.

The average pool chlorinator uses 3-inch tablets so as long as the diameter of the body is 3 inches or more then they should work.
