Hello Justin.  The Hayward TriStar VS Pump - W3SP3202VSP would be a compatible replacement for the Hayward Super II Pool Pump SP3010X15AZ.  Super II SP3010X15AZ Performance Data indicates a flow rate of 87GPM @ 50 ft of Head.  The TriStar W3SP3202VSP Performance Data indicates a flow rate of 103GPM @ 50 ft of Head.

I feel the pump could be on its last leg and looking at what the best drop-in VS replacement would be for when the time comes so that we can save on our electric bill. Would the this TriStar W2SP3202VSP be an appropriate drop-in replacement, or would another option be better/more efficient for this purpose? TYIA

Hello.  Referencing the Hayward Super Pump C48K2N143B1 Performance Data, this pump was rated 50 GPM at 50ft. of Head.  The Hayward Super Pump VS Variable Speed Pump 230V - W3SP2603VSP is rated 56GPm @ 50ft of Head at 3450RPM.  The Hayward Super Pump VS intake and discharge ports are in identical positions.  There would be minimal plumbing alterations, none if the original Super Pump is installed with unions.  The Hayward TriStar VS Pump - W3SP3202VSP is rated 103GPM @ 50ft of Head at 3450RPM.  The TriStar installation would definitely require plumbing changes.  Either VS Pump would be an acceptable replacement.

Looking for a pump replacement for a SP4015X20NS Hayward Northstar.
 Reply

A  Answered on 7/4/2022 by InyoPools Product Specialist Craig C.

Hello James.  The July 2021 enactment of the DOE Energy Conservation Standards for Dedicated Pool Pumps eliminated single-speed pool pump production in favor of variable speed manufacturing.  The Hayward TriStar VS Pump - W3SP3202VSP would be a compatible replacement for the Hayward NorthStar model SP4015X20NS.  Comparing the Performance data for the two pumps at 50 ft of head the NorthStar has a flow rate of 119 GPM, the TriStar VS 105 GPM.  Plumbing modifications would be required to complete the transition.

Hello Tony.  The Hayward TriStar VS Pump - W3SP3202VSP would be a compatible replacement for the Hayward NorthStar model SP4015X20NS.  Comparing the Performance Data for the two pumps at 50 feet of head the NorthStar has a Flow rate of 119 GPM, the TriStar 105 GPM.  If the pool features (waterfall, lazy river, 2 story solar heating panels) do not require 119 GPM the transition will present no issue.

I have a 56K gallon pool with an almost 9 yr old Hayward SP3215EE that just failed. Looking at either a SP3210X15 or SP3202VSP. May need to upgrade voltage. Recommendation?
 Reply

A  Answered on 4/14/2022 by InyoPools Product Specialist Craig C.

Hello John.  The direct replacement for the SP3215EE is the Hayward TriStar 1-1/2 HP, Energy Efficient, Full Rated Pump - W3SP3215EE. (THP 2.4) (120GPM @ 50 ft of head)   Hayward TriStar 1 1/2 HP, Max Rated Pump - W3SP3210X15 (THP 1.85) (100GPM @ 50 ft of head)    Hayward TriStar VS Pump - W3SP3202VSP (THP 1.85) (100GPM @ 50 ft of head @ 3450RPM)  Supply Voltage for all 3 pumps is rated 230V +/- 10%.  The W3SP3215EE 208V supply voltage rating indicates the motor will operate at 208V, not 10% under.    If the pool requires 120GPM the W3SP3215EE is the correct replacement.  For energy efficiency, the W3SP3202VSP is the correct choice if pool features don't require 120GPM.

The Hayward TriStar VS Pump - W3SP3202VSP is a wonderful pump, it is heavy duty. The current Super pump is not considered heavy duty and it may be too much pump, however, it could also serve you well as being more efficient by upgrading. We will need the filter model number to verify that it can handle the upgraded flow rates up to 130GPM. The TriStar VS only operates with 230 Volts, it will not work with 115V.

 Reply

A  Answered on 4/11/2020 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Randy, Yes this would be a suitable replacement for your Hayward SP4010X15 pump in regards to water output. You are correct the ports are not in the exact same position as your old pump so some re-plumbing will be required. Unfortunately, there is not a pump that has the exact same port location as your old SP4010X15 pump. The Waterway 1.4 HP Variable Speed Pump does have adjustable bases so it does allow you to align the ports up with your old port location, we can't guarantee this will line up exactly but it should make the plumbing easier.

I have an older Hayward Northstar pump, #SP4007X10NS. It has a SP1607Z1MNS Northstar motor which is 1.0 HP on the label with SF listed as 1.4. So either 3/4 HP x 1.4 = 1.05 THP or 1.0 x 1,4 = 1.4 THP. I'm not sure how that works. All fittings are 2". Will this W3SP3202VSP pump work as a replacement for what I have now? The HP is somewhat higher at 1.85 THP but I guess that could be limited with the variable speed feature. Are there also less expensive models that might work?

Hi, Jack. In order to determine if this pump will save you money, you will need to calculate the Total Dynamic Head (TDH) of your pool. The use that data with the TriStar Performance Curve to determine the max operating RPM's.

So you can use the Super Pump Variable Speed Pump model W3SP2603VSP however those are special order with an approximate lead time of 2-3 weeks or you can use the model PL2606 which will have extra strength in case you need it in the future. If you use the PL2606 then you will also need the automation adapter.

I have an 18,000 gallon pool. Originally, it had a Hayward TriStar 1.5HP, that was replaced with a Hayward RS 1.0HP. Additionally, there is a Polaris 280 with 0.75HP booster, which powers the cleaner as well as two Polaris Sheer Descent waterfalls. The pool does fine with this setup, even with the reduction in HP of the original circulatory pump, which is now failing. Will this pump be suitable in my application? Will this pump at full power eliminate the need for the booster pump?
 Reply

A  Answered on 5/30/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Dennis A. The Polaris 280 requires a Booster Pump, however, this pump will be able to operate the two Polaris Sheer Descent waterfalls. If you replace the Polaris 280 with the Polaris 360, then you will be able to eliminate the booster pump.

Ok, thanks for your response. I will be placing my order soon. Will probably just hold off on the Polaris until the booster pump fails completely. One more question; I currently use a dual Intermatic timer box with freeze protection. Does this pump have freeze protection, or will I need to continue using the external timer setup that I currently have?

Hi. Looking to replace a 1.5 HP Hayward single speed pump. Will this pump work (and will it work efficiently) on a pool with 2" suction plumbing and 1.5" return plumbing?

Hello Dave - The SP3200VSP pump will be more energy efficient and it will work for your application.

In most single-speed or dual-speed pump electrical wiring configurations, timers are used to provide power to the pump; one timer on a single speed; two timers on a dual speed (one a hi/low). Looking at the Tristar VS Variable Speed Pump wiring schematic, it seems that no timers are required whatsoever, and that the onboard pump control circuitry is used to turn the pump on and off, etc., without having to use any timers whatsoever. Is my understanding correct?

That is correct.  The Tristar SP3200VSP model has a 24-hour clock built into it.  The Hayward Tristar VS Pump Owners Manual has details on configuring the timer.

My old hayward motor died, it was a 1.5 hp a.o. smith. Would like to replace entire pump with a Hayward SP3200VSP Tristar Variable Speed. Will this work?

Hi Bill - Yes you could replace your 1.5 HP Hayward pump with the Tristar variable speed pump. For this pump we would suggest that you have a minimum of 2" plumbing. You will see a considerable savings on your electrical bill by upgrading to a variable speed pump, up to 90% energy savings!

Motor failing on old pump

After removing the old pump, the wiring was installed into new water tight seal-tite. New terminals were crimped and installed on the end going into the pump. Once connected, it was bolted in place and new PVC was cut to attach the pump to the existing plumbing.

Read the instructions, take your time, and assess the situation. Pump replacement is a straightforward install. Prep the job and get the tools BEFORE you start! It will save you time and frustration in the long run!
