What does this part do and is it necessary? I've noticed it has become obsolete on other filters.

Hi Chris, The Air Bleed Assy is necessary, it acts as a vent so you can bleed the air out of the lines through the filter.

What happens if you do not install this.

Not installing this part will allow the DE powder to bypass the grid filtration and permits the filter media to re-enter into the pool.
