Can this valve be mounted vertically?

Yes, the valve can be mounted vertically. The flow of the water must be moving up. The flow of the water cannot be moving down.

You say the water cannot be moving down. What does that mean? My water would be coming horizontally into the check valve and then turning down back to the spa

Hi Jim, The Flapper Style Check Valve is for vertical flow, you will need to get a Spring Style Check Valve for horizontal water flow.

I plan to mount this so the water will enter the valve horizontally and exit the valve vertically going upwards. Is a flap valve appropriate in this setting? What is the water enter horizontally and exits vertically going downwards? Would I need a spring valve for this? Thanks.
