What is Service Factor?

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

I need to replace my magnetek century pool pump motor for cat b661 part # 165198 and also need to replace the motor shaft and repeller. Can I use any brand name motor or which motors would be best. I would like to use an EE motor. Do all specifications on the label have to be the same. I'm a little lost because I found a motor but it says capacitor start which I don't know what that means. Please help.

Ultimately the decision will be yours because you can use this same motor being the B661 which is an energy efficient single speed, a dual speed B2980T(only operates with 230 volt) which gives you a low speed option and or a variable speed ECM16SQU which has multiple RPM optional settings. As far as seals go you would need to have the model of the front pump housings ready in order to cross reference that and for the impeller, most of the time the impellers have a part number molded into the plastic but if not that front pump housing model should get us the rest of the information that we need,

I have a 3/4 hp AO Smith 56Y. It's really old. Maybe up to 18 years old. I want to replace it with something modern. Can I go with a 1 HP? Pictures attached.

Hi, Alan. You can replace your existing pump with the Sta-Rite Max-E-Pro 1 HP Up Rate Standard - P6RA6E-205L.
