The spring side of the shaft seal goes on the backside of the impeller and the white ceramic portion goes into the seal plate closer to the motor. We have a good step by step Guide on How to Replace a Pool Pump Shaft Seal which goes into detail on this, step 12 - 17 show this pretty well.
