I found an order history for William Ferry and you show a purchase of a 9440C in 2012.

What Is the difference between the 1720C-20 and the 1700C-20 ?

The True Union Swing Check Valve, 2" Clear (1720c20) is a swing style check valve and does not have a spring inside to open and close the check valve. The Clear Check Valve 2" - 1/2 lb. w/ Unions - 1700C20 is a spring style check valve with a 1/2lb. tension stainless steel spring.

If used in a horizontal location does it have to be on a certain rotation, i.e., hinge up ?

The check valve will have an arrow on it that indicates the direction of flow. http://www.inyopools.com/Blog/plumbing-valve-guide/

Is this check valve adequate for placement inbetween the heater and salt cell since it doesn't have a spring. Wondering if it will close when pump is off and prevent seepage since there will probably be very limited back pressure

I need to replace a 2" flo check valve/ all union, original equipment all pvc body. Type is not marked on the body. For a vertical installation which will be more reliable, swing flapper or spring?

Hi, Stephen. A Swing Flapper style check valve like this one will be better.
