What is Service Factor?

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Hello, To test the capacitor with a multimeter, set the meter to read in the high ohms range, somewhere above 10k and 1m ohms. Touch the meter leads to the corresponding leads on the capacitor, red to positive and black to negative. The meter should start at zero and then moving slowly toward infinity. There is also a testing video.

The run capacitor for that motor is part number 5270-07 and the start capacitor is 5270-09.

This is the capacitor recommended on this site for my A.O. Smith B228SE pump motor. The capacitor I took out of it was 50 microfarad 370 VAC. Will the 25 microfarad still work after using a 50 microfarad last season?

Two terminals. have both wires live when disconnected.
Is this normal?
Does one wire go to each terminal?
Someone (pool company) had both wires to one terminal.
doesn't seem right to me.

Can you confirm this is the correct capacitor for it? the model # matches, but the capacitor in the photo appears shorter than the one in my motor. Also, the pump runs fine at high speed, but hums and doesn't run at low speed, could that be the other capacitor? or this one?

If you have another capacitor it is the start capacitor & probably will be the one that is faulty. It does sound like the issue. We are not able to determine the correct one based on model info as the mfg will use different ones on the same model. We I.D. them based on the MFD or UF rating on the capacitor.

The capacitor you need is that 628318-308 number you provided, and it is the 30 MFD (5VR0303). Yes there is the difference between the two capacitors, hence the different ratings and names.

I have a centurion 7-164304-24. It's making noise (loud hum) and the motor case is hot to the touch. I dont think its cavitataing, but it had been sucking air for a few days. Any ideas?
Hi Jeffrey, These are all classic signs that your motor needs to be replaced. The correct replacement motor the motor included in your photo is this B129 1.5 HP Motor. Hi Tim, as you know, a failed capacitor will prevent the motor from turning over. Another cause of humming could be a seized motor shaft. If you can spin the motor shaft manually, the capacitor is likely the cause of the humming. If the shaft does not spin manually, the bearings or complete motor should be replaced. Your motor has this start capacitor, 124-149 MFD as well as this run capacitor, 25MFD 370V. This video on What’s the Difference Between a Start and Run Capacitor? helps explain it a bit and this article on How to Test a Pool Pump Capacitor will help you test them, but I would bet your start capacitor is the culprit.

Hi there, I have AO Smith Motor 7-187694 -01, it is a 2.5HP water pump. Speed one does not engage and it hums, however, speed 2 engages every time with no issues. I can get speed 1 to work if the shaft is already turning. What capacitor would I need in this case? I only see one on the motor which is 628318-307.

Hello Luke, that is a sign of a bad start capacitor that needs to be replaced. You will need to order START CAPACITOR, 189-227 MFD (PTMJ189).
