How many hours per day should I run my pump?

There are many factors to consider; bather load, gallons of water, pump horsepower, type and size of filter just to name a few. A good guideline is 8-10 hours a day. On the cooler days and early and late season, you can cut the run time down to 4-6 hours because there is usually less swimmers and cooler water requires less chemicals. In peak season, when it is the hottest, raising the run time to 10-12 hours per day will help to keep the pool clean and circulating during it’s time of heaviest use.

I have a Hayward Northstar pump 1.5 HP SP1615-Z-1-BNSC. I want to replace it with a variable speed pump. What model do I get for a replacement, hopefully without changing the plumbing pipes

My 24,000 gal. pool has 1 1/2" piping. A local pool supply store recommended the intelliflo vs, which I see you said was overkill, and you recommend this pump instead. They also recommended a Clean and Clear 320 sq. ft. filter, which appears to be oversized for this pump, which filter would you suggest to match with this pump? Thanks!

Hi Liam, we always suggest going oversized on the filter as it puts less stress on your pump and you will have less time between cleanings. For these reasons we would suggest staying with the Clean and Clear Plus 320 filter.

We're planning a 10K gallon in-groud pool upgrade -- up from a 3K gallon in-ground swim spa and re-using our salt-chlorine generator (+ roof solar). We need to upgrade the pump/filter and hook it all to the time-clock. Questions: Which filter: C9002 or C12002? Would this pump pair well with either (+ 2in lines)? When connecting to the timer, would the SCG hook to the timer on the pump or would I need a separate time clock (and then bypass the pump timer)?

Hi Hunter, The C12002 filter will be better than the C9002. The Super Pump VS pump has 1-1/2" port but a reducer will be needed for 2" pipe. The pump has a built-in timer but the SCG will have to be powered by an external timer.

I have a 25000 gal pool with a 3/4 hp single speed pump w/1.5 in. piping and am looking at replacing with the intellifo 011018. If I went with the Super pup VS Variable Speed Pump what model would I need?

Kenneth, You can take a look at the SP2602VSP. Please note that the pump uses 230/240v only. Also, if you have a lot of elbows in your plumbing, the pump will not be able to circulate the water at the lower speeds.

Hi I have a kidney shaped free form pool that is roughly 32000 gallons. I have a Hayward 200lb sand filter and currently a burned out whisperflo 2 hp pump. Was told the intelliflow 011018 would be to much for the 11/2" piping and the filter set up. What would you recommend ? I am looking at a VS pump to save on the electric bill. Also I have no extras running off the pump besides a kreepy krawly. Thanks

I have a 23,500 gallon pool, 2886 GPH, 48 GPM and I think a Total Dynamic Head of around 20. I presently have a 1HP 230V AO Smith Century Centurion pump, and a Hayward Super Star Clear model C-4000.
Would the Hayward Super Pump VS Variable Speed Pump 230V in 1HP be a proper replacement pump?

The pool I plan on installing is roughly 19,000 gallons. I will have 2 skimmers, and 2 main drains (on same Line). 5 returns.
The pump will be roughly 40 feet from Skimmer 1 and the Main drains, and roughly 70' from Skimmer 2. I will have a return line for a automatic vacuum later on.
I can go either 1.5" or 2" pipe size depending on the size of the pool pump I will need.
My question is Will the Super Pump 700 work or do I need to bump that up to the TriStar 900

The manufacturer does not provide a pump curve for this pump due to the fact that it has various RPM options. The closest curves that may be relevant to it would be the various curves on all of the Super pump models.

I have a Hayward single speed pump and I would like to move to a Variable speed. Is it difficult to switch manufacturers. I was looking at Pentair brand over Hayward. is the install going to be much more difficult.

Hi, Sean. It is no difficult to switch manufacturers. You may have to replumb your system based on the pump you have and the pump that you'll be installing. Pentair has a very strict warranty policy.

I have a 30k gallon 20x40 pool. Just added a Hayward heat pump and salt water chlorinator last year. Was running a 1.5HP Hayward single speed super pump through 1.5 in plumbing. This year installing all new 2 in plumbing and want to add a variable speed pump. What would be the best model?

Hi, I have a 28K gal. in ground, 1.5" lines (2 skimmer, 1 main & 2 return) with approx. 50ft TDH. I want to upgrade my 20" sand filter to a Hayward 24" sand filter (62GPM). I currently have an old 3/4hp Hayward single speed pump and looking to upgrade to a larger variable pump to support the larger filer...is this a good choice?

Hi, Greg. Yes, this pump will be sufficient for your pool at full speed. However, with 50 TDH, you're unable to operate the pump below 3000 RPMs.

What is difference between Hayward SP2603VSP (which is a super variable pump “expert line”), or Hayward W3SP2303VSP or Hayward W3SP2603VSP?

They are the same thing. The "WS" is a Hayward number meaning it is sold online. But the product is the exact same thing. Hayward just likes to make things confusing with this :)

I have a Hayward Ecostar 2.00 HP (2.70 THP) variable speed pump which needs to be replaced (drive assembly failed). The pump is only 3-4 years old. What VSP product do you recommend I purchase for replacement ???

Hello Mark. The Hayward TriStar VS Pump 2.7 HP - W3SP3206VSP would be an excellent variable speed pump replacement for the Hayward EcoStar 2.7 THP. The Hayward TriStar Inlet and Discharge Ports align with the Hayward EcoStar's allowing for an easy transition. Attached please find the EcoStar owners manual. EcoStar Product Dimensions are listed in section 2.3.

Do new 1 1/2" unions come with the W3SP2603VSP Pump? Also I have a Jandy Aquapure Salt generator. Do I have to buy a timer to control the salt generator or just hard wire to stay on all the time?

Plumbing Unions 1 1/2" are not included with the Hayward Super Pump VS Variable Speed Pump 230V - W3SP2603VSP Attached please find a link to Custom Molded Products High Temp Unions which are compatible with the Hayward Super Pump VS Pool Pump. The Jandy AquaPure Salt System can be hard-wired for constant power with the flow switch utilized for On/Off operation. The use of a dedicated timer would provide an additional layer of operational safety for the AquaPure Salt System. Attached please find a listing of Intermatic Timers that could be utilized for this project.

Hello. The Hayward Super Pump VS Variable Speed Pump 230V - W3SP2603VSP intake and discharge ports are in identical locations on the pump. The Super Pump VS port size is 1.5". The Super Pump was available in port sizes of 1.5" and 2.0". Please check the existing port size. The Super Pump VS is rated for 230V only. Attached please find the Super Pump VS Owner's Manual Please note Section 4.9, page 10, Wiring. Hayward stipulates that the Super Pump VS be permanently connected to the circuit. There is no option for a pre-wired 240V electrical cord.
