I have a Hayward Super Pump Model c48j2n131 that runs quiet but seems to be over heating. It will shut itself off and then kick back on by itself once it cools down. What could be causing this? Will I need to buy a new pump? If so would this pump match my old one?

A     Answered on 8/9/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Dustin. The motor could be drawing too many amps, volts, improper ventilation and or a damaged impeller can cause a motor to overheat. The Century UST1072 Motor is the direct replacement for the C48J2N131 motor.

The model UST1102 is the 1 hp version of this motor. Please keep in mind that if you want the full 1 hp to be utilized then you may need to change the impeller and diffuser. Also if the filter is not capable of the extra gallons per minute flow it can damage it.

The motor model numbers that you provided, unfortunately, do not cross reference on our site nor under a google search. But we do show the original replacement motor for the Hayward booster pump model 5060. It would be key number 11 on the parts diagram here. Lastly, we do not have a seal kit for that pump but would recommend to change the seals on keys 5 and 6.

Hi, Larry. You can use the 1 HP - UST1102 or the 1.5HP - UST1152 as a replacement. However, you will first have to confirm if your system can handle the additional water flow and you will also have to change the impeller to match the motor's hp.

Will this give me a better chance for a longer life? Don't want to change out anything other than the motor. Is this the correct 3/4HP replacement motor (i.e. to match up to the front of the pump)? Thanks

A     Answered on 7/26/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi Don, Unfortunately, increasing the hp of the pump will not ensure that the motor will last longer. The ST1052 is the correct replacement but if you want to increase the hp you can go with the UST1072, Impeller SPX2605C and the Hayward Super Pump Tune Up Kit GOKIT3 or GOKIT3SALT.

I have a Hayward SP2610X15 Super Pump with ao smith motors c48j2n131b3. The motor is a square flange but it appears the round flange is now recommended. I'll appreciate knowing the replacement model and if I need anything else (I think I need the pump tune up kit and a shaft seal but I'm not certain) Thanks very much for your help.

A     Answered on 7/25/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi Howard, The mounting plate that the motor bolts to is square but the motor flange is considered round or C-Faced. The model number you provided SP2610X15 cross references to a UST1152 as the replacement motor but the motor number C48J2N131B3 is replacement by the UST1072 motor. So if the motor was downsized then you will need the UST1072 motor along with the Hayward Super Pump Tune Up Kit - GOKIT3 or GOKIT3SALT.

Hi Dan,Yes that would be the correct replacement motor. If it's a super pump the shaft seal you'll need to replace when you replace the motor is gokit3, if it's a super 2 then the shaft seal is gokit2.

Hi Ben, The A.O. Smith 3/4 HP Full Rate Energy Efficient Motor (CT1072) will be the correct replacement motor however you could use the A.O. Smith 3/4 HP Full Rate Motor (ST1072). If you use the ST1072 it is cheaper but it will cost more to operate that the CT1072. The Hayward Super II Pump Tune Up Kit (GOKIT2) will also work with the RS Pumps.

A     Answered on 8/13/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Charlie R.

Hi Stephanie, Yes, the replacement for your motor (C48J2N131B1) is the UST1072. The tune up kit pertains to the make and model of your pump- not necessarily the motor. Gokit3 is for a Hayward Super Pump. If you can confirm you have a Hayward Super Pump, then yes, this is all you need to replace your motor.

Hi, The pump design is what can categorize the pump as self priming not the motor. The UST1072 would be the correct replacement motor for you model # C48J2N131B1 and will fit your Hayward Super Pump which is self priming.

Looking over the questions and answers below, there are two places where a replacement motor is said to be the UST1072 and a new shaft seal is recommended. However, the two shaft seal part numbers are different, yet they are supposedly for the same motor. Which is the correct shaft seal part number for the UST1072 3/4 HP pump?

A     Answered on 5/7/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

ChrisP, That's because this motor can be used on several different pumps, but the shaft seals are unique to that specific pump housing. So in order to get you the specific shaft seal you need we will need to know the manufacturer and model of your pump housing. Pump xxamples would be Hayward Super Pump, Hayward Super II, Jacuzzi Magnum, Hayward Max- Flo, etc..

A     Answered on 1/18/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

What we have listed on our chart pages is the pump model number. The model number you have will just identify the motor. If you look on the plastic housing on the pump there should be a sticker which will have the pump model number. You can usually find this by the discharge port on the pump. Once you locate it you can choose the correct replacement motor. Be certain to change the shaft seal and gaskets as needed. You can use our >How to guide if you need help.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?

A     Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?

A     Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

What is Service Factor?

A     Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Motor had rusted out

Written on 8/30/2017 by Guest

This was my first time installing a pool pump motor. What I did was remove and replace the motor and change out the old seals. When installing new seals I used the included seal lub. After installing motor I checked it out and looked for leaks. I took my time and was finished in a couple of hours. I did need to change out some house to motor electrical connections to get a better electrical contact, but all together it was a easy job.
