How Does a Saltwater Pool System Work?

A salt chlorine generator uses its cell and the process called electrolysis to generate chlorine. Salt, aka sodium chloride, is made of the two elements sodium and chloride. Your salt cell contains an array of ruthenium-coated titanium plates through which a small charge is run. When your pool’s saltwater passes through the salt generator cell, the individual salt molecules strike these plates, causing the sodium and chlorine elements to split. The sodium stays suspended and relatively inert while the chlorine is released to find and destroy bacteria and other pathogens. When the free chlorine is spent, the sodium and chlorine recombine to reform the salt molecule, restarting the process.
