What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I want to down size the pump capacity on my 8000 gallon in ground pool. Currently have Hayward Tristar dual speed pump SP3215EE that produces excess flow on low and high settings. Could this motor be used in the Tristar with the correct size impeller for the motor rating? This would reduce my operating cost when running on HI through the solar collector panels (4 each FAFCO 4'x8').

Hi, Sam. If your motor is still functioning, you can replace just the Impeller w/ Screw 1.0 THP - SPX3207C, Impeller Ring - SPX3021R and Tune Up Kit Hayward TriStar - GOKIT81. If not, you can use this motor along with those parts.

Hi Inyopool Team, I have attached the pic of my 10+ year old pool motor which stopped working. What would you recommend is the best replacement for this motor. Also I am curious if a single-speed motor running at 1725 RPM is good enough to run the pool. But I am not able to find such a motor in your catalogue, only dual speed with one option of 1725 RPM. Thanks for your reply in advance.

Hi Krishna, thanks for the photo! Could you send us a few photos of your pump and motor? Please take a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation.

Added more photos. Sorry it is not wide angle but hope it helps. Also I have just ordered a replacement pump and shaft seal from your site as given below - so it would help if you could reply to this message ASAP. Is this the correct motor for a Pentair 1hp dual speed Superflo pump? Thank you

Hello Scott.  The Century Motors 3/4 HP Dual Speed Full Rate Motor model SQS1072Ris a compatible replacement motor for the Pentair 1.0 HP Superflo Pump.  The Century Motors 1.0 HP Dual Speed Full Rate Motor model B2982 is also a compatible replacement.  It is recommended that the motor shaft seal, seal plate gasket, and diffuser o-ring be replaced at the same time.  The GOKIT78 contains these parts to complete this project.  Century 1.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Dual Speed Full Rate Motor - B2982     Tune Up Kit Pentair SuperFlo/Sta-Rite SuperMax - GOKIT78
