Installation Suggestions

Check Valve Placement
✅ When possible, install a check valve on the suction side of the pump.
✅ This helps keep water in the pump basket when the system is off—making priming easier and reducing wear on the pump.
✅ Avoid placing the check valve too close to the suction port; allow space for smooth water flow.

➡️ Pump Plumbing
Every pool installation is unique—space constraints, existing plumbing, water features, and equipment layout can affect pump plumbing. The following best practices can help maximize efficiency and extend pump life.

✅ Pool Plumbing Best Practices

  • ✅ Use larger plumbing on the suction side for easier priming and reduced pump stress. Example: Install 2" plumbing into the suction side, then use a 2" × 1.5" reducer bushing to connect to a 1.5" port.

  • ✅ If possible, run at least 12" of larger pipe directly before the suction port—benefits are still seen even if only the last section before the pump is upsized.

  • ✅ Maintain a minimum of 12" of straight pipe before the pump’s suction port.

  • ✅ Avoid 90° elbows within 12" of the pump’s suction or discharge ports.

  • ✅ Fewer elbows = better flow. If you must turn the plumbing, use two 45° fittings instead of one 90° elbow.

  • ✅ For systems losing prime after shutoff, install a check valve on the suction side—following proper placement guidelines.

Check Valve Placement

1.5” Plumbing - Check valve not to be placed within 7.5” of pump suction port

2” Plumbing - Check valve not to be placed within 10” of pump suction port

2.5” Plumbing - Check valve not to be placed within 12.5” pump of the suction port

➡️ Piping Guidelines

Use Larger Piping When Possible – Larger pipe sizes improve water flow and reduce system strain.
Match or Exceed Suction Size – The suction-side piping should be the same size or larger than the pump’s return port.
Keep Suction Runs Short – Shorter suction lines reduce priming time and extend pump life.
Install Isolation Valves – For most installations, place a valve on both the suction and return lines. This allows you to easily isolate the pump for maintenance.
Maintain Proper Straight Runs – The first fitting (valve, elbow, or tee) in the suction line should be no closer to the pump inlet than 5× the suction line diameter.
Example: A 2.5″ suction pipe needs 12.5″ of straight pipe before the pump inlet.

⚠️ Avoid 90° Elbows at Pump Ports – Do not install 90° elbows directly into the pump’s inlet or outlet, as this increases turbulence and reduces efficiency.

How many hours per day should I run my pump?
 Reply

A  Answered on 10/8/2013 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

There are many factors to consider; bather load, gallons of water, pump horsepower, type and size of filter just to name a few. A good guideline is 8-10 hours a day. On the cooler days and early and late season, you can cut the run time down to 4-6 hours because there is usually less swimmers and cooler water requires less chemicals. In peak season, when it is the hottest, raising the run time to 10-12 hours per day will help to keep the pool clean and circulating during it’s time of heaviest use.

What is the extent of the warranty on this product? Does it cover freezing weather conditions? Are all parts covered under this warranty?
 Reply

A  Answered on 4/9/2023 by InyoPools Product Specialist Hector F.

Hello Mona, this pump carries a 1 year warranty. It requires that the pump is installed per the installation guide that you can view here. Also water that is left in the pump causing freeze damage unfortunately will not be covered under warranty. I have also emailed you an estimate that you can convert to an order if you would like. Item is in stock and ready to ship.

Existing Hayward single speed pump needed to be replaced.
Written on 4/9/2026 by Guest

My original pump had screw on connectors so as simple as unscrewing and reconnecting the INYO replacement pump. One recommendation to INYO, include some female connectors to use with existing wiring. Had to take a trip to the hardware store to purchase these, once connected to the wires they push right on to the tabs.

Windings in 2 year old motor were bad
Written on 3/11/2026 by Guest

My pool repair company could not repair motor as they cannot instal none variable motors as the law has changed for licensed pool repair companies. But I can and saved $1900. I will admit, I was a tad scared. I purchased this drop in and it took me 70 mins to switch out. Union nuts made this operation simple. According to the my pressure indicator this pump has 50% more pressure and is so much quieter.

30 plus year old Hayward Super 11 pump case failed. New PL1702 was an exact match and more reasonably priced and less expensive than individual parts

If the original pump was properly installed with pipe unions, then this is a simple job for an DIY person. If not, then some experience with cutting, gluing & fitting PVC pipe is required. Moving electrical connections from old motor to the new looks confusing, but is no more difficult than changing a light switch in your home. The instructions could be better. First, turn off all electrical power to ALL pool equipment. Disconnect electrical line from pump. My pump was installed without unions. So next step was to cut PVC pipe at the pump connections. Preserve as much of the original pipe as possible until any modifications needed are known. Almost any saw will cut the pipe. Hint, mark your cut line with some painters tape around the pipe, it will give you a straight line to follow. Remove old pump. I installed a CMP Check Valve ahead of the new pump. I installed Purline Pump Unions at the inlet and outlet on the pump. This moved the new pump further from the pool return line, requiring some adjustments in the return line and the connection to the filter. Not difficult, just required adding a couple of feet of 2" PVC pipe and fittings. I also had to lengthen the electrical line, using a weather proof junction box and conduit, about 12". With the pump in its new position I was able to make the new connection from the pool return line to the Check valve and to the pump. This was basically a straight level connection of more than 12". The new connection to the filter required a little more work, as it come from the top of the pump, so reducing the vertical line to account for the union and adding to the horizontal line to the filter required some modifications. Once all of the connections are glued and made up, let the glue dry for several hours. In the meantime make the electrical connections to the pump motor and confirm that the switch matches your current requirements. You may need to replace the connectors on the wire ends, they are crimped on female connectors that slide onto the male connectors already installed on the motor. Hint, special crimping pliers are made for these connectors, but locking pliers or squeezing them in a vice will do the same job. Check your work, make sure all valves are properly set, start the pump and check for leaks.
The old motor and many old parts are compatible with replacement PL1702 and may be useful to you in the future.

Super pump 2 replacement-Super pump, two end of life and leaking
Written on 12/17/2024 by Guest

Advertisement says it’s a direct replacement and it essentially is but expect to do a little bit of monkeying. also, there is an adapter you need to order. It wasn’t clear when I ordered mine but customer service was great and got me the part quickly. I am happy to report that this pump is quieter than the original super pump that it replaced more powerful believe it or not and half the price so guess what my new pump is this one it only last so long anyway and with this replacement for a little more than the cost of a motor you get a whole new part Thanks guys really like your service and product

I called INYO to get a replacement. I had the new pump at my house within three day. It arrived at 6:05pm by 7:15 pm I had it installed. I have better pressure and much quieter. Best decision I’ve made.
