Why should I purchase the heavy duty seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/17/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

The heavy duty shaft seal features carbon graphite, stainless steel, and Viton rubber. The properties of this seal contribute to the resistance of chemical corrosion. This is the best choice for salt chlorine generators or ozonators.

Is the salt seal for the Hayward Super Pump and the Super Pump II the same? I just ordered a seal kit and it is for the Super Pump (square-ish shape) and I have the Super Pump II. Hoping I can use the one I now have and just not use the other parts in the kit. Returning would be time consuming for getting the pump running again. Thanks, Mark

Hi Mark G, The Hayward Super Pump and Super II Pump uses the same pump shaft seal and diffuser gasket.

I see I still have the correct seal kit in my cart and somehow I had the wrong one also in the cart and must not have noticed the difference! I sent a note a few minutes ago as I had just noticed that the kit I now have is the wrong one...but I'm hoping the seal itself is the right one and I'll just use it... Is there any way I could return for the correct one without the 20% restocking change? (I know it takes time to put returns away, rather time consuming, thanks)

A  Answered on 7/17/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi MarkG, If the kit has not been opened or used you can return it, we can also waive the restocking fee but you will be responsible for the return shipping.

Hi, Ed. Silicone is not required for the installation of the pump seal, however, you can apply a little lubricant to the seal plate prior to pressing the seal in place.

Purchased the Heavy Duty Seal for Salt Water and noticed it is smaller in size than the original seal. I can get it on the impeller shaft but it takes a lot of finesse while the original seal slips right on with plenty of room for the spring to flex. There doesn't seem to be any ability for the new seal to flex (too tight). Is this correct as I've double checked your site and the 3868 seal appears to be the correct seal for a Super Pump II (2 HP).

A  Answered on 12/20/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Scott W.

Make sure that you removed the metal piece from the old shaft seal from the impeller. If that is still on there it will make it difficult to install the new shaft seal.

I have a 2004 Sundance Optima and need a seal for the single speed jet pump. The pump is marked as a 6500-263. Internet searches indicated that the US Seal PS-2868 was the correct one for this pump. I bought it but when it arrived the seat fit nicely into the pump housing but the seal is for a 3/4 inch shaft. The motor I have has a 1/2 shaft. Is there a seal with a 1 and 11/32 inch seat and a seal that fits a 1/2 inch shaft? I have been unable to locate this locally or on line. Thanks!
 Reply

A  Answered on 4/29/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Roger. It sounds like the seal you received is the correct size seal. The pump seal is not supposed to fit tight around the motor shaft, when the two parts of the seal come together that's how it seals stopping water from leaking out of the pump through the seal plate.

I have a chlorine pool, not saltwater but I seem to replace my pump seal at least yearly, maybe slightly more often. I am wandering if a "heavy duty" pump seal would solve my problem or at least last longer than a "standard" pump seal....?? If yes, would this pump seal work on my chlorine pool pump? (...I have a Hayward super pump II.....) Thanks

A  Answered on 6/21/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Robert, Yes the heavy duty seal would be a great idea for the leaking problem you have and this 5250-235 seal will work on your Hayward Super II Pump.

I have a Hayward super II pump. My problem is I don't know if it is a 1600 series or the 2600 series. Are there some numbers on the pump housing that I can cross reference to, to know what pump I actually have? Or do the same parts fit both pumps? Mine is leaking water on the shaft input side. Thanks.

There are only two seal kits for the Hayward Super 2. The GOKIT2 for a standard chlorine pool and the GOKIT2SALT for a salt water pool.

The dual speed motor that you are looking at would unfortunately not replace your motor. We do not carry a matching dual speed for that motor so you would have to go with a UST1072 or the variable speed motor model ECM16CU. And yes, this seal is correct for that pump.

A  Answered on 5/11/2018 by InyoPools Product Specialist Charlie R.

Tina, The shaft seal is based on the pump make and model and not the information on the motor. If possible, take a look at the make and model listed on the pump housing. That information determines which shaft seal you need.

If wanting an OEM shaft seal, you would need "SPX1600Z2". If looking for a universal, a PS201 will also work.

 Reply

A  Answered on 9/10/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Joe S.

Do you have information on the front half of your pump? The best place to find your pump model information is on the pump housing tag. Pool pump manufacturers label each housing with make and model information as well as serial numbers. The pump model number is the golden ticket to finding the proper tune-up kit, so we will want to find that most of all. The tag is usually placed on the side of the strainer basket or near the discharge port for easy access. Model number formats vary depending on the manufacturer but should be marked clearly.

The shaft seal will actually be dependant on the model name or number of the front pump housing that the motor bolts to. If you are not sure of the model you can always email us at upload@inyopools.com with a few images of the pump so we can review and further advise.

It is a pure line motor for a salt water pool. Part # 1102.

So the seals or seal kit will actually be based on the model name or number of the front pump housing that the motor actually attaches to.

Hi, Jeff. Replacing the shaft seal will not cure that issue. Any loud noise will come from the motor bearings which are failing. You can either replace the bears or the motor.

I replaced my shaft seal with the heavy duty one and the leak is gone, yay! However, I am hearing a grinding noise now. Is is possible water got into the motor and rusted it some while it was still leaking? I ran it a few times even with the leak. Or maybe something broke free when I put it back together, it operates fine, primes, flow is good. Just a grinding noise is how I would describe it.

 Reply

A  Answered on 12/28/2020 by InyoPools Product Specialist Hector F.

Hi Mathew, there does seem to be quite a clear amount of rust and corrosion on the motor that could be the cause of the grinding noise from within the motor.
