does the strainer threaded lid removal tool always work? If not what next if the lid refuses to budge?

Hi, The Cover Removal Tool will work, if you're unable to get the lid off then the next option is to replace the pump housing.

So what wrench will work on the PowerFlo. Pump

Unfortunately, there is not a lid wrench for the Powerflo Matrix pump. If it is difficult to remove the lid, the Strainer Cover and Bracket O-ring (354634) (SPX5500H) - O-453 may need replaced and or add Magic Lube O-ring Lubricant 1 Oz. Teflon - 630 to the new or old O-ring, it will help tremendously. The Plug, Drain W/ Gasket (spx1700fgv) can be removed if needed to help release pressure from the pump, just make sure you close off or plug the skimmer in the pool otherwise it will continue to drain water from the pump.

(5 out of 5 stars) Fixed Pump Air leak
Reviewed By: Inyo Customer ()
I have a Hayward pump which had a cover with 2 knobs that held it down. I have had a lot of trouble with bursts of air coming out of my pool inlets and noticed sperts of water coming from the pump cover when shutting the pump off. No matter how hard/tight I cranked the cover knobs down and even after replacing the cover o-ring, I could not get rid of the apparent air leak. This had been troubling for several years. I noticed one day that the pump also has threads inside the pump housing and found out that there was a screw in cover available. I ordered the screw in cover, a new o-ring and a cover wrench. I just installed the screw in pump cover/lid today along with the o-ring and now the air leak has been stopped. The Hayward pump cover/lid wrench makes taking the lid easy to remove.
