Hi, John. This UST1202 motor is the correct replacement. It does not matter that the replacement motor has the Capacitor housing on top. I'll also recommend that you get the Super Pump Tune Up Kit - GOKIT3 or GOKIT3SALT

Hi, I have a 17-yr old Hayward Super II Pump SP3015X20AZ w/ 75' head in Arizona where I run the pump 12 hours per day every day. The original unit lasted 11 years until the motor went out. I then replaced it with a refurbished motor and I am on my 4th refurbished motor in 6 years. Lately the water is barely flowing over my raised hot tub - it used to really flow. I've replaced seals every time w/ motor - white impeller ring inside is shot. Is it time for an all-new pump? Thoughts?

A     Answered on 9/13/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Frank, Yes based on what you have said I would suggest an entire new pump after 17 years some of the internal components of the pump may be worn down. If you want to replace with the exact same pump then you can get this Hayward Super II SP3015X20AZ or I'm a big fan of the PureLine Prime Variable Speed Pump this pump is great as it lets you dial your HP into any HP between .5 HP and 1.65 HP which will save you a ton on your electrical bill, typically 65% savings over a single speed pump.

Can I put a 2 hp motor on without causing a problem? There is a spa attached to the pool that uses the same filter(Pentair). This will be my fourth motor in 17 seasons and I live in PA so our pool is only open 3 months a year. Does anyone make a motor that will last? Thanks. Rich

Hello Kevin, depending on what year your unit is there is the 2008-current version which would be A.O. Smith 2 HP Up Rated Northstar Replacement Motor - USN1202 and there is no gokit with this there is HAYWARD NORTHSTAR/TRISTAR SHAFT SEAL (OEM) - SPX3200SA.  With the Hayward Northstar 1998 to 2007 needs a Tune Up Kit Hayward Northstar 4000 Series Pumps (Pre-2003) - GOKIT66 and the USN1202 motor is the same.

Now that motor has burned up, and, I want to replace it with a more powerful motor, mounted on my existing pump housing. Is this the motor I need, and, will I need a kit in order to adapt it to this housing. If not, which motor/kit do I need? Thanks.

Hi, Scott.I would recommend recalculating your feet of head using the steps in our How To Size a Pool Pump guide. I would recommend replacing the pump because rebuilding the pump to a 2hp would not be far off.

Hi: I have a Jacuzzi 2HP magnum with this exact motor. It started making a loud grinding noise and isn't getting any water through it. It's about 15 years old. I think my options are buy a new motor, buy a new pump (identical), or get a different pump. What's an equivalent pump (or motor) that would get similar results/performance, but be more energy efficient? I don't have anything built into my control panel that supports multiple speeds - just on and off - not sure this limits me.

A     Answered on 5/24/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Jay. The Magnum Force Pump 2 HP Pump - 94027120 is the exact replacement. You can use the Super II Pump EE - SP3015EEAZ as an energy efficient replacement option.

Hi, John. Our How To Understand True Pump Horsepower guide explains the difference between full rate and up rate motors. The Jandy PHPU 1.5hp original came with a 1.5hp up rate motor (UST1152 or B229SE).  The UST1202 motor does come with the capacitor on top.

A     Answered on 5/6/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Matt. The original pump model # SP2607X10 is for a 1HP pump. If the motor was increased to a 2.5HP (max) and now you would like to decrease the motor to a 2HP (max), the impeller and diffuser will need to be changed. The kit you will need is the Hayward Super Pump Tune Up Kit - GOKIT3 or GOKIT3SALT.

A     Answered on 5/5/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, JJ. A 1.5HP full rate motor has a total hp of 2.25 so technically you already using a 2hp motor. You will have to upgrade to a 2hp full rate motor ST1202 which will have a total hp of 2.6. You will have to replace the impeller along with the necessary parts to make the conversion depending on the pump model. If you're replacing a 1.5hp  full rate motor to a 2hp up rate motor - UST1202, you do not have to replace the impeller, diffuser etc. just the pump seals.

Hello JJ, what matches K48M2N110 is A.O. I can't tell the difference between the ST and UST models other than it appears that the UST model has the option of using either 115 or 208-230 volts. The ST seems to be 208-230V only. I have a 208-230 circuit. Thanks, Don

A     Answered on 3/28/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Andy O.

Hello Don- No, it is recommended that you stay with the A.O. Smith Round Flange 2 HP Full Rate Motor - ST1202. The ST1202 is a full rated motor and has a total HP of 2.6. The A.O. Smith 2 H.P Round Flange Up Rate Replacement Motor - UST1202 is uprated and only has a total HP of 2.2. The St1202 is a stronger motor and if the appropriate parts aren't changed when going down to the UST1202, i.e. impeller and diffuser (if needed), then the motor will fail prematurely. A     Answered on 5/27/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Scott W.

If you did change from a 1-1/2HP to a 2HP with the super pump you'll have to replace the impeller as well because the motor will be too big for the impeller. Also you'll need to know the flow rate of your filter and foot of head to see if your filter will even be able to handle the increased flow rate.

I'm trying to find a replacement motor for my pool pump but my model number doesn't match what you have listed as the model number. My model number begins with a C48 and yours begins with an SP. Please help.

What we have listed on our chart pages is the pump model number. The model number you have will just identify the motor. If you look on the plastic housing on the pump there should be a sticker which will have the pump model number. You can usually find this by the discharge port on the pump. Once you locate it you can choose the correct replacement motor. Be certain to change the shaft seal and gaskets as needed. You can use our >How to guide if you need help.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?

A     Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?

A     Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

What is Service Factor?

A     Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.
