Product FAQs

Q:Can I replace my 1.5HP motor with a 1HP?

A:Yes. You can downgrade the motor. You will also have to downgrade the impeller, diffuser and eye seal (if applicable) as well.

Q:I recently changed my pool motor and gaskets. I made sure to lubricate all the gaskets with vaseline. A few days later water is leaking from the pump. What did I do wrong? Help please!!

A:You never want to use vaseline on any rubber gaskets or o-rings. Vaseline is petroleum based and will deteriorate the rubber quickly. Whenever you change the motor on a pool pump it is recommended that you replace the gaskets and shaft seal as well. A >Go-kit contains the shaft seal, packet of non-petroleum based lubricant and gaskets you will need for your pump. If you already have the gaskets, you can purchase >Magic Lube.

Q:I need a pump for an outdoor garden system. I don't want to filter the water as I want all nutrients flushed through my planting bed. Can I run a pool pump without a filter so I can achieve this? Thanks.

A:You can use a >pool pump for quite a few different applications as long as there is enough water to "feed" the pump. You will want to pay attention to the flow rate of the pump (gallons per minute). You do not need a filter in order to use it. Please note that while the pump strainer basket will help catch moderate-large sized debris, smaller debris will pass and may lodge itself by the impeller. The type of pool pump you will need will be dependent upon your  application. An above ground pool pump needs to be installed below the water surface and an inground pool pump needs to be installed above the water surface. The warranty may/may not be affected and it's a good idea to contact the manufacturer to find out.

Q:What parts on my pool pump can I replace before I have to buy a new pump?

A:You can extend the life of your pump 10 or 20 years by replacing worn parts. These include the motor and motor shaft seal, 3 gaskets, the strainer basket and cover, the impeller and diffuser. Click our guide on "How a Pool Pump Works" to see where these parts are located in a typical motor. See our other pump guides for step-by-step procedures on replacing these parts.

Q:How do I check my pool pump's impeller to see if its bad?

A:Your pump's impeller may be cracked or worn and wobbling or just clogged. To look at or replace your impeller see our guide on "How to Replace a Pool Pump Impeller". For information on how a pump works, see our guide on "How a Pool Pump Works".

Q:How do I change the shaft seal on my pool pump?

A:Changing the >shaft seal is quite simple. Here's > >How To Replace a Pool Motor Shaft Seal.

Q:How do I change the motor on my pool pump?

A:Changing the motor on a pool pump is not that difficult. Here's a video on How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor. In addition to the video you can read our step by step guide here  Make certain that you purchase the correct shaft seal or Gokit to go with your new motor.

Q:I have a leaking pool pump that seems to be getting louder when it turns on. I made sure everything is clear inside of the basket. How do I know it's just the motor? Please help.

A:If you have a leak, it is more than likely caused by a failed shaft seal. Once the shaft seal fails water is able to enter the motor body and cause damage to the bearings. Typically it will cause the motor to run louder than normal and the motor will eventually fail. Your most cost effective option would be to replace the motor and the surrounding seals/gaskets. You can purchase the >shaft seal alone, but it is recommended you purchase a  >GoKit. A Gokit contains the shaft seal, housing gasket, lid gasket, diffuser gasket and non petroleum based lubrication.

Q:I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

A:Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking >here >  >if you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label >here.

Q:Are all Hayward Tristar Pumps considered variable speed?

A:>No, The only variable speed TriStar pump is model#: SP322063EEV. This pump requires either the SP3220VSC - TriStar Energy Solution Control stand alone control, or the SP3220VSCAQL - TriStar Energy Solution Control for Pro Logic
