Hi, Jim. Yes, you can replace it with a 1.5 HP motor. If you want to increase the water flow, you will have to make sure your system and filter is sufficient along with changing the pump's impeller and diffuser to match. You will also need to replace the pump seals.

The motor I am replacing is an AO Smith 1 HP. Volts are 230/115. I noticed that the Pureline motor you list has it as 115/230. Does that matter? The Amps is 6.0/12.0 which doesn't match either. Does that matter? Thanks.

Hi, Matthew. This PL1102 motor is unable to replace an ST1102 motor because of the service factor (SF) rating. Use can use the PL1152 or the ST1102 as replacements.

What is a motor service factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 8/5/2018 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Marla. Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Would you suggest replacing whole pump and motor or just motor? Need pricing on just 1 hp motor and also price on whole unit. We have a new liner, Ordered and want to get ready for It. The 3//4 Hp we have always seems to run warm and is noisy, our pool is 26,600 gallons and measures 18' x 36'

Hi Joan, If you would like to replace your motor with a 1 HP you would need this PL1102 motor, this Hayward Super Pump Seal Kit and this 1 HP Super Pump Impeller. I personally like the PureLine Prime 1 HP PL2601 which is a drop in replacement for the Hayward Super Pump. The Prime does have 2" ports so you will need Two 1.5" x 2" Adapters. My suggestion would be to go the PL2601 PureLine Prime as this will get you a complete new pump and will be easier to install.

what is the difference between a "B" insul class and an "F" insul class?
 Reply

A  Answered on 5/15/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Per the manufacturer. We build all of our motors with class “F” insulation or better.  When the nameplate indicates class “B”, this means the motor is designed to operate within class “B” temperature rise limits.  These limits are 80 degrees centigrade at 1.0 service factor, and 90 degrees centigrade at 1.15 service factor.  For many years, it has been our policy to nameplate open dripproof motors that meet this temperature rise criteria with the insulation class “B”, regardless of the actual insulation type.  This gives the end user the information that the motor has a 90 degrees centigrade, or less, temperature rise at 1.15 service factor.

I have a 23,000 gallon in-ground pool. I have the Hayward S-200 sand filter with a rating of 42GPM. I had a 3/4 HP motor on a Hayward Super Pump. The motor bearings have failed and the motor was seized. Can I up the motor to a 1 hp, and maybe upgrade the impeller, without changing the whole pump?

You could but I would not recommend it for the increase in water pressure moving through the filter could cause damage to it.

When attaching the impeller to the motor shaft, how do you hold the end of the shaft to tighten it on this model?

At the rear end of the motor where the shaft comes out you can hold it steady with a small wrench so that you can unscrew or tighten the impeller.

I have a 1 1/2 hp Hayward Super Pump model # C48K2N143B1 which this pump is supposed to replace but this is only 1 hp. Is this the correct replacement motor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 10/26/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Alan M.

Hello John- I would definitely verify the motor number and specification information on the label and compare it against the UST1152  1.5HP Motor. The models of this motor include C48K2N134B1 (slightly different than N143B1). You would also want to compare the impeller sizing to ensure it is sized for a 1.5HP motor and not a 1HP motor. Here is a link to the Hayward Super Pump parts page. Don't forget the Tune Up Kit!!

I have a Hayward Super Pump, Model #C48K2N143B1. Which replacement motor do you recommend? I wouldn't mind have a dual speed with a timer if you have a motor that will fit my pump. Thanks
 Reply

A  Answered on 9/30/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Alan M.

The correct replacement motor is the A.O. Smith 1 HP Round Flange Up Rate Motor - UST1102. If you are looking for a dual speed alternative, I would recommend the 1 HP Full Rate Two Speed Motor W/ Timer - Round Flange (B975T,B2975T). Whenever you change out a motor, we recommend you replace the seals and the GOKIT3 will include all the o-rings and seals for the Hayward Super Pump.

Unfortunately, the PL1102 is not the same total HP as the ST1102. The PL1102 would be the equivalent to the UST1102.

A  Answered on 2/20/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

The key points on a label to know to ensure the proper motor selection are the Model number, Part number or Catalog number. If a match of one of these numbers is found, that match is the drop-in replacement for your motor. We also provide a guide on >How to Read a Pool Motor Label

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. A  Answered on 1/18/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

What we have listed on our chart pages is the pump model number. The model number you have will just identify the motor. If you look on the plastic housing on the pump there should be a sticker which will have the pump model number. You can usually find this by the discharge port on the pump. Once you locate it you can choose the correct replacement motor. Be certain to change the shaft seal and gaskets as needed. You can use our >How to guide if you need help.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.
