What is Service Factor?

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Hi Andy, The A.O. Smith 1 H.P Square Flange EE Up Rate Motor (UQC1102) would be the suitable replacement motor.

This seems to be the replacement for my old k48L2N104. However this is a four bolt set up and my old one has six. Is this a problem?

This is the correct motor replacement. The six bolts are from the plastic mounting seal plate that the motor is bolted to and not the motor itself.

My motor is humming before tripping breaker. I have a model k48l2n104 motor which this seems to be the placement but I was told to replace the capacitor first to see if that is the problem. Does my model have only one or both capacitors? Mine is a silver container and doesn't look like either that I saw.

Hello Laura, you have 2 capacitors, 628318-306 is your Run Capacitor and 610807-001 is your Start Capacitor for the CT1102 motor

water coming thru seep hole at when running, when shut doff it loses prime . on restart and reprime get a lot of bubbles and some dirt

In answer to my recent question on replacing a 1.5 hp motor you recommended the UQC1152. On the header of your answer email it says "Energy Efficient AO Smith Round Flange 1 HP Full rate Motor". Is the UQC1152 1 or 1.5 hp?

The UQC1152 is a 1.5HP motor, square flange which is what you are needing, not a round flange motor.

i have a new ct1102 to replace my 4 year old ct1102 but
the seal does not seem to be seating... water just runs out on the motor side (at restt)
is the shaft of thenewer models longer than the old?
is there a longer (spring side) bearing to accountfor this?

Hi, Stu. The shaft is definitely not the problem, either the pump seal is old, not installed correctly or is the wrong size. You can follow the steps in our How To: Replace a Pump Shaft Seal for installation instructions.

My pump motor is starting hard and slow and pops the breaker on the main panel. Does this motor have a starter or does the entire motor need to be replaced?

Based on the two model numbers (K48L2N104 and SP1610Z1BE) listed on my current motor, I see that this (CT1102) is the replacement. It was previously stated here that Total Horse Power (HP x SF) of the new motor should be equal to or greater than the old motor. My old 1HP motor has an SF of 1.5 for a THP of 1.5. The new replacement 1HP motor has a SF of 1.4 for a THP of 1.4, which is less than the old motor. Is it ok to be close or will this affect the life of the new motor?

Hello, being within .1 of an HP will not affect the performance of the pump.

I am replacing a Haywood Super II motor for a SP3010EEAZ pump. The motor is AO Smith K48L2N104 with 56J frame. Do I need model CT1102? Chlorination is provided by a salt converter. Is your GOKIT2SALT the correct kit for seal replacement?

Trying to replace A K48L2N104 Motor, This returned as the go to motor from search but the specs are slightly different than what is listed on the motor. Will this be suffice and if not what would I be looking for instead?

SF: 1.5
FR: 56J
RPM: 3450

Is this motor an enegry effecient repacement for a ST1102? Also, what Go Kit will I need? I've included photos because I'm not sure my pump's model other than being manufactured by Hayward. Contrary to how the equipment may appear, it's not a salt water pool.

Yes - but no. The California Title 20 regulations will not allow us to ship you an exact replacement single-speed CT1102, but the variable-speed EVC165 motor will be perfect and will be compliant. We recommend replacing the shaft seal when replacing the motor, but there were 2 different seals used on that pump.
