According to Hayward their heat pumps have a flow rate range of 30 to 70 GPM, with an optimum flow rate of 45 GPM. If your pump is capable of significantly more flow than this, a flow meter is recommended to insure the flow rate is within the prescribed range.

Can a heat pump be installed indoors?

Generally no. Heat Pumps work by transferring heat from the surrounding air to the pool water. If a heat pump is installed indoors there must be a continuous supply of warm air from which the heat pump can extract heat. If you must heat the air in the room before the heat pump can extract that heat to heat the pool, there would be no benefit to the heat pump.

No. Any installation that causes the air being discharged from the top of the heat pump to be recirculated back into the heat pump will cause a loss of capacity and efficiency in the heat pump. Installation of a heat pump under a deck, or a low over hang will allow the air being discharged to be drawn back in by the heat pump.

Hello Len - The 140k BTU heat pump would be sufficient for 60° ambient temperature. We would recommend using a solar blanket along with the heat pump.

This is the terminology taken straight from the Hayward Heat Pump Pool Heater Limited Warranty ( It is on page 22 of the manual ) " This warranty is valid only if the product is installed according to the HAYWARD specifications. " The best suggestion is to either have your installer call Hayward to get the specs ( 908-355-7995 ) or for you to call and make sure it is in accordance with there warranty department.

Hello Mike, You can install a flow meter in the line to measure the amount of GPM's you are getting at the place where you would plum in the heater.The heat pump will run like an AC unit. SO set it to a temp and it will rise till that temp is met and then it will turn off.

Hi John, This would be the heat pump I would suggest for a 16' x 32' pool in RI. You could possibly go down to the 125,000 BTU unit but the pricing difference is minimal and this heat pump will heat your pool quicker.

On your website, it is recommended that we use a 60 Amps breaker for the Hayward Heat Pro Pump 140, 000 BTU but the name plate inside the pump says 70 Amps. Do you know if we could use a 60 or it has to be 70? Thanks.

Linda, A 60 amp breaker is required, also the HeatPro® Heat Pumps For In-ground Pools and Spas (LITHTPRO15) from the Hayward website states that the maximum breaker is 60 amps. I would recommend calling Hayward at 908-355-7995 just to confirm.

I am in Gainesville FL. Our large pool is about 1000 sqt. in surfase area and about 45000 gallon. Usually, the swiming season is from middle May to middle september because my wife is sensitive to the cold. She hopes she can extend the swimming season. She hopes the water tempeture can be above 80 degree at least. Is one Hayward HP21404T Heat Pro 140000 BTU Ahri Pool Heater will be good enough for the large pool ? If not, is it possible to paralelly connect two heat pumps?

Thank you for your question. A minimum clearance of 72 inches should be allowed above the unit for unrestricted air discharge. The unit must not be installed under a porch. Any side of the unit should be located at least 24 inches from a wall or from any other obstruction for unrestricted air intake and service access.

When hooking up the 140,000 but heat pump, normal plumbing shows the automatic chlorinator installed past the heat pump with a back flow preventer. No problem. My question is can you use the chlorine sticks in the skimmer basket safety with the Hayward Heat Pump. This would have chlorine coming from the skimmer basket to the pump, filter and then the Heat Pump before going back to the pool. Will this damage the Heat Pump?

Hello Jerry, I would never suggest putting any form of chlorine into your skimmer. Doing so will damage your pump, filter, and heater. The purpose of the check valve between the chlorinator and the heat pump is to prevent concentrated amounts of chlorine from entering the heat exchanger. By putting chlorine into the skimmer would send the very highly chlorinated water through your filtration system.

When hooking up the bypass valves to and from the heat pump, are you using just ball valves that are either on or off? Or do I have to install diverter valves for that. The Pic shows 3 bypass valves. Just wanted to be sure.

On page 9 of this manual these valves look to be 3 2 way valves. They can be either ball or diverter types.

Hi Kevin, You can really oversize a pool heater to a pool, this unit will heat your pool. In order to maintain the manufactures warranty all parts of the installation has to completed by a authorize installer.

Hi Jim, A pool with the dimensions and dept can range from 9,400-11,900 gallons depending on whether it's free form or rectangle. I would recommend no less than a 95,000 BTU unit. This 140,000 BTU unit will heat the pool much faster.

I understand the unit can be controlled by an external device but the TCO allows the heat pump to control the pool pump to keep the water temp at the set point. From what I understand a remote system just allows turn on/off of the heat pump.

Looking at the HP21404T (140K BTU). Previously responses have noted the need for a 60 amp breaker but the Hayward data sheet (http://www.hayward-pool.com/pdf/literature/heatpro-brochure-lithtpro15.pdf) lists a minimum ampacity of 42 amps and overload protection of between 50 (min.) and 60 (max.) amps. Therefore, wouldn't a 50 amp breaker work as well? Thanks.

We just purchased from you and installed a Hayward Heatpump Pro 140,000 BTU heat pump. Hell of a great unit. Took our above ground 20x40 pool from 55 to 80 in a couple of days. Love it. Question is this. Our pump is manually turned on and off with no timer as of now. How do we shut off the Heat pump when the pump is off. Right now I am turning off the circuit breaker for the heat pump. My question is do I have to do that or can I just shut off the pool pump and let the heat pump turn itself off.

Jerry, Good to hear you are happy with your purchase. The heat pump has an internal flow sensor. The heat pump should not come on if there is no water flow. You can test this next time you turn the pump off. The only downside is that if the sensor fails for any reason, the heat pump may try to run.

The pipe connections are located on the rear of the unit near the base. To connect the electricity, you must unscrew the five screws of the front panel, then slide the electric cable through the knockout located on the left or the right side of the base, and then insert it in the control box.

Hi, Tony. No, you do not need a check valve between the pool and the chlorinator. If you have a heater, it would not be a bad idea to place a check valve between the heater and the chlorinator to prevent backflow of concentrated chlorinated water into the heater piping.

If you are wanting to heat your pool quick a heater, either propane or natural gas, would be the way to go. A heat pump will get it to the temperature that you want it to be, but not as fast as a heater. You would heat your pool efficiently with a 200k or 250k BTU model heater.

You shouldn't have to solder anything. You would unhook the old pressure switch and hook up the new one. The wiring should hook up just like you were wiring a pump motor.

It will not help enough in the winter time, but come next fall it would definitely extend your pool season another month or two. And yes, the 140k model would be adequate enough though I would recommend either a winter cover or solar cover to speed up the heating process as well as help maintaining the heat in the pool.

Hi, Edward. The by-pass valve is not automatic but manual which is built using 3 Ball Valves. The by-pass is shown on page 9 Fig. 3 of the Hayward HeatPro HP21404T Owners Manual. Delivery can take an average of 5-7 business days once the unit leaves the warehouse.

You can figure about 5,000 watts or 5 kilowatts per hour per 100,000 BTU’s for a heat pump. For a typical 100,000 BTU heat pump, that’s 5 kilowatts per hour. Can I use your 140,000btuh heat pump and run the water through a propane pool boiler? Basically, set the propane boiler at 85 degrees and when the heat pump can't make that hot of water, have the boiler raise the temperature? I'm assuming the flow rates will have to work for both.

No it would not be overkill. Bigger when it comes to heaters and heat pumps are usually going to be more efficient. It will be even more efficient if you get a solar cover to go along with it. Then you are heating your pool faster and retaining the heat longer when you are not in the pool.

Yes, the 140k model would be the one you want if you are trying to extend your pool season during the summer months. If you are trying to heat the pool during the winter months or you have a spa you will want a propane or natural gas heater instead of a heat pump.

It will depend on the weather everyday, but the heat pump is set up to turn on whenever the water temperature goes below what you set your desired temperature and runs until it is back to that temperature, and will run as long as your pool pump is on.

You would be looking at about $110-160 a month. It will be on the higher end initially because it will have to go from 70 to 85 degrees but once it is there all it has to do is regulate your water temperature and will go toward to lower end for cost.

Hi Tina, no the heat pump does need to be outside as the heat pump draws in the outside air to heat the water. When the heat pump is heating it actually outputs cold air and if the heat pump is inside then the air in the room gets cold and then the heat pump has a hard time heating.

Natnor, For a 24' round pool, I would recommend at least a 95k btu model or higher. Please keep in mind that these units run on 230/240v and need at least a 60 amp breaker. The cost can vary. I would recommend contacting your electric company with the specs on the heat pump. They will be able to calculate the approximate cost.

Bob, Yes the unions are CPVC. PVC is a thermoplastic polymer, while CPVC is a thermoplastic produced by the chlorination of PVC resin. PVC is typically used for a wide number of applications, while CPVC is mostly used for hot and cold water pipes (pool heaters/heat pumps). They can be used/plumbed together.

Hello Lorenzo- For your area and pool size I would recommend going no smaller than a 140k Heat pump. This will get you the best efficiency as well as extend the season to April-September. I would also recommend using a solar cover or liquid solar cover such as Natural Chemistry COVER FREE 1 Gallon - 07109 to retain the heat in the pool.

Hello Rob this unit must be installed to it's own 42-60 amp dedicated breaker. This heat pump must be connected to a bonding grid with a solid copper conductor wire gauge 8 AWG or larger to comply with Article 680 of the NEC. All Hayward heat pumps are designed for copper conductors only. The National Electrical Code (NEC) in Article 680, and most other codes require that all metallic components of a pool structure, including reinforcing steel, metal fittings and above ground equipment, be bonded together with a solid copper conductor wire gauge 8 AWG or larger. The heat pump, along with pumps and other pool equipment must be connected to this bonding grid. A bonding lug is provided on the rear of the base pan of the heat pump to facilitate bonding.

pool size is 20x40 3.5-8ft. deep 30,000 gals Lowest average nighttime temp here in Dayton, Ohio for May-Sept is in the low 60's, not looking to expand the swim season, so plan on mid May-early September. How can I determine cost of running this unit when electricity is (7cents/kwh). I assume the result is the cost per hour to run, but I assume it doesn't run constantly. Is there any way to get a ballpark calculation of how much it would run when the desired water temperature is 85 degrees.

Automatic erosion type chlorinators, if used, must be installed downstream (between the heat pump and the pool) of the heat pump, and a check valve (or Hartford Loop) installed in a manner that will not allow the raw chlorine to drain back to the heat pump when the water pump is off. Failure to follow the instructions may result in property damage.The heat pump is designed for a maximum flow rate of 75 GPM. An External Bypass Assembly can be added to regulate the flow rate through the heat exchanger to prevent damage. Failure to install an External Bypass Assembly with a flow rate of 75 GPM or higher will void the warranty.

I have a pool around 27,000 gallons, about 576 ft2. I live in Long Island & would like to heat the water 15 degrees over ambient temp 3-4 months of the year. If it's 70 degrees outside, for example, I'd like to get the pool water to 85 degrees. How much electricity (kwH) would you estimate one of your heat pumps to use for that on a monthly basis? I was looking at a 140,000 BTU unit. Would that size be correct? Thanks.

Joe, The HP21404TC can still operate at temperatures as low as 40F. This is useful especially in regions that experience cooler ambient temperatures. The standard version can only operate at temperatures of 50F and above.

In ground pool. 15,000 gallons, ~600 sq ft surface area. Want to extend season by month in fall and month in spring, Live in Charlotte NC. Hi Terry, Based on the information you supplied I would suggest the 140,000 BTU unit, you probably could get by with the 125,000 BTU unit but for the few hundred dollar difference I think you will be really happy having the extra BTU's during the colder months when you are trying to extend your pool season. I have this larger BTU unit and I have been quite happy with the results.

I just had the heat pump installed and got it running today. I have a duel speed Hayward pump so I tried it on low first to see if it would be enough floww but got a HP error code. So I kicked it on high now and it's been fine. Just stinks that is happened as normally always leave the pump on low during the day. Now trying to figure out the best way to run this heater and pump. Any ideas welcome on what to do Hate to leave it on high but hate to not have heater on either.

Hello Lorenzo- Unfortunately these heaters, as you know, require a minimum flow rate to operate. You would need to either find a variable speed pump that you can program such as the PureLine Prime Variable Speed Pool Pump 1.65 HP - PL2605, or only heat the pool when necessary and on high speed. By getting the VS pump you would be able to find the lowest possible RPM to run the heater instead of being stuck with just High Speed as an option.

Our pad has a slight angle to allow for runoff, we plan to have the front/back of the unit facing the side of the pad such that the sides will be on the high and low side of the pad for runoff. Will the unit operate correctly sitting at a slight angle ( probably 1 inch drop over 5 feet or so)?

Hi, Paul. You get the unit, unions and a manual. You will need a Check Valve if you have a chlorine feeder. The average power required is 30 amps. It does not, just the operating time. Yes, it is activated by the water pressure switch.

We have a hot solar water heater currently. Heat is transferred via a heat exchanger. We are thinking of upgrading the heat exchanger and was wondering if installing this type of heat pump would be beneficial. If there's no sun or no hot water produced by the solar system, the heat pump would provide the heat transfer. If solar is active, then pre-heated water would be passed through the heat pump without requiring any additional heat.

Hi. Unfortunately, the manufacturer starts the warranty from date of purchase. The units are shipped fully charged. There is not a part number for a 1-1/2" coupling. You can purchase an adapter which can be purchased at your local hardware store.

We keep a 16 x 30 pool with approx. 15,000 gallons at 83 degrees. Nights in Jan and Feb. get to 45 and most days do not reach 70. Sometimes, it will reach 70. Economically, does it make sense to turn the heater off for 10 cool days and then bring it back up to 83. Does it make more sense to leave it on.. I am thinking it will cost more to turn it off for 10 days, have it get down to 60 and then bring back to 83. How long does it take to get 15,000 gallons from 60 to 83 degrees?

Installed heat pump yesterday, everything working ok, no codes except for when the circulation equipment switches off. Then 'flo' is flashing and illuminated in the display. I understand that no water is flowing. But should this code be flashing up all night? I imagined that the heat pump would shut itself down after a period of no circulation, but this code constantly flashing. Is this normal? The heat pump is not on a timer or connected to the circulation, hard wired to 60 amp disconnect.

I live in Englewood FL which is south of Tampa Bay. My pool is about 24x12 with an average depth of 4 1/2 ft. There is an attached 7 ft diameter spa. There are 2 separate pump/filter systems but they can be valved so the spa waterfalls into the pool. We use the spa year round and will use the pool occasionally (86 deg) during the winter. What do you recommend? Also, do I pipe the heater to both systems or just heat the spa and have it spill over th the pool?

I have a 27 foot round, 54 inch deep above ground pool in Massachusetts. What size heater is recommended? Also if less than the 140,000 BTU unit is recommended. I live in North Texas. I purchased a home that has a 20k gallon pool. There is a huge oak tree that shades my pool all day. Last summer we had 5 days of 100 degrees or higher and the pool temp only reached 81 degrees! I have been told by almost every pool guy to get a gas heater, it will be chaeper to run. Pool is approx 16x32 w/approx16-19000 gallons (every person out here measuring says something different). Would the 125K be efficient? There's a differece of opinions depending what dealer I speak with. We're being told the 140K wouldn't make a big enough difference in heating for the extra money spent, & others highly disagree. We are in Central FL near the coast & wish to keep the pool around 80-85 as it will be used for fun, but also therapeutic purposes.

Vincent, the suggested wire gauge and length of wire for the proper installation of the Hayward Pool Products HeatPro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU, is 97 feet of 10 gauge wire. This is the Recommended Wire Length from Breaker to Heater. If you exceed the 97ft the 10 gauge will not be sufficient.

For the 140k model the minimum amperage is 50amp. 6 gauge can handle that but I think 10 is very light by all references I can find. Please explain.

Loc is short for Lock Code. Calibration/Configuration mode can be locked to prevent tampering by unauthorized persons. Code is adjustable from 00 to 99. 00 is no lock mode. The factory default setting is 50. To enter the Calibration/ Configuration Mode: Once Loc is displayed enter the Lock code by pressing the up or down arrows

I live in southern nh and I'm looking into buying this heat pump but all the local pool companies wont sell these models. They sell aquacal or nirvana. I'm not sure I want to take the risk with this heater. Are they really as good as the reviews? Why so inexpensive?

Erik, in my opinion, the HeatPro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU - HP21404T is the best heat pump on the market. I would stay away from brands like Aquacal and Nirvana. Their parts are hard to find when you need them, service stations are few and far between, and they are not always the best about honoring the warranty. You definitely can not go wrong with the Hayward unit. They are more expensive because they are more reliable and have a better name behind them.

I just bought a new Hayward Heat Pump HeatPro pool heater and have a question about it's operation. The fan runs before the compressor starts, just wondering if this is normal? We had a Jandy heat pump before and the fan didn't start until the compressor kicked on.

Greg, yes, the fan on the HeatPro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU - HP21404T will come on before the compressor to make sure that the cabin is cool and the fan is doing its job before the compressor kicks on. If the compressor came on and the fan was not turning it could overheat.

The formula we use is surface area of pool x temperature rise x 12=BTU required to heat. The temperature rise is the difference between average coldest temperature where you live and what you want for a pool temperature.

Leave it on. The unit will run when the pump is on, you can use a cover to retain the heat to allow the unit to operate less.

It really depends on your heating needs for example how hot do you want to maintain the pool and in which months you will be using the heater. I would suggest looking at this Electric Heater Pool Sizing Guide to determine your needed KW and then refer back to the heaters on this page Raypak Electric Heaters.
For heating purposes other than a pool or spa, can this raise water temperature from 30 deg. C to to 50 deg. C?

Because you are closer to the beach you will get more wind which will cool the pool. Normally this would be a larger unit then what you need, but because of where you are at it would be fine.

Good day, this unit does not have an option to turn on a pump. We would recommend the Raypak Classic Series Heat Pump 140,000 BTU - 016033. Either unit will turn on when there is water flowing through the unit and it will need to achieve the desired temperature.

Hi. Yes, this is plumbed after the filter of the circulation system. This unit is unable to handle a flow rate of 250 GPM. It can handle a max flow rate of 75 GPM. A manual bypass will need to be install.

I have a customer who purchased a pool heat pump 1 year ago. He is now losing Freon. Since this is a closed system, what could be the cause of the Freon loss?
When he purchased the new heat pump, he also converted over to a salt water pool. Could his salt level have anything to do with the damage to his coil? Are your heat pump coils made of aluminum or copper?

Hi, Jody. A leak in the freon line is the issue. This can be caused by several factors including corrosion from a saltwater environment. The unit will have to check out by a qualified technician. You can reach out to Hayward since the unit is within the warranty period.

4. I would like to be able to control the heat pump from a distance. Knowing that my wif signal by the heat pump is pretty strong, what controller would you suggest I use, knowing that it will have to activate the water pump to a certain RPM for the heat pump to work right? I installed this heat pump recently on a 32,000 gallons pool with a Pentair VS pump running at 2600 rpm, a Quad DE 100 Filter with a multiport valve. Filter is backwashed and showing pressure at 15 psi. However, I keep getting FLO error on the heat pump in FILTER mode. I know there is good water flow as the salt generator connected downstream from the heat pump works fine. Interestingly, the FLO error disappears if I switch to recirculate mode on the multiport valve. Any ideas on the issue?

My guess (This one is hard to tell without being there) is there really is not enough flow getting to your heat pump. So I am guessing it is more a problem with your multiport valve. Maybe it's not turning all the way to get proper flow to the heater.

Thank you. It is an interesting viewpoint. Multiport valve is less than a year old. Would it fail so quickly? If there is an issue with the multiport valve, would the salt generator also not show a flow error? I would appreciate if you can share any ideas on testing and isolating a multiport valve problem. Again I am just throwing out ideas here. So although the salt generator is showing it is getting enough water flow it might not be enough for the pool heater. I would check to see if the multiport valve is opened all the way while in the position that sends it to your heater (or when you are having the issue). It might be that it is not completely turning to allow the full flow to come out. The other thought is maybe there is a clog somehow in the valve. Of course it could be an issue with your heater, but if you are able to get proper flow through your heater when the valve is in a different position it points to it not being a problem with your heater, but rather an dissue with your plumbing. It's either the way it is set up or a problem with one of the valves.

This unit will operate fine at hot outdoor temperatures, but the BTU output does drop as the ambient temperature and humidity drops. The brochure for the heater does not have information on 60 degree ambient air, but you can expect to only get 85,000 BTUs when the exterior temperature is 50 degrees.
