Time to Replace Your DE Grids?
Our DE Grids are used on the most common pool filters including American Products®, Pentair®, Hayward® & Pac-Fab®. Most DE Filters will require 7 Full Grids and 1 Partial Grid. Typically DE grids last about 5 years so if it has been longer than 5 years then now is the time to replace your DE grids.
Things to Consider When Replacing Your DE Grids
Note: Collar has open slot (2 notches). Length is measured from one end of the grid to the other (collar not included).

I have a 15 yr old Nautilus INS Pac Fab 48 DE filter. Works great. Also own new set of fins for it. After last cleaning now dripping from lower piping assembly underneath/within the skirt/housing below the tank. I think it is probably just o rings etc on that lower piping assembly.
1. What would I need to purchase? Try this first? OR
2. If I buy a new Pentair FNS Plus D.E. Filter, will I be able to use the whole new set of fins I already have for the Nautilus INS Pac Fab 48 DE filter
Reply
Hi Rick, I would first start off by replacing key # 26, 31 and 32 located on the Pac Fab Nautilus INS Parts Break Down Page. If you do end up going with a complete FNS Plus 48 Filter then the individual grids will work from the INS to the FNS Plus but the top and bottom manifold are different. So if you have a pre-assembled grid pack you will need to remove the grids.

These are not the correct grids for the Waterway Crystal Water D.E. filter model 570-0048. There is a smaller 48 sq. ft. grid part number 4742-100 and the larger grid part number 4742-103. This model takes 7 of the large grids and 1 of the smaller grid.

The easiest way to figure out the correct grid would be to measure the length and width and compare it to the measurements we have listed on the product page.

After opening the air relief valve to remove the pressure from the tank, I removed the tank cover. Then I took the grid assembly out of the tank. I disassembled the unit by removing the 5/16" locking nut from the top while holding the 7/16" nut at the bottom with an adjustable wrench. After disposing the old grids and hosing down the residual de from the other parts, with the aid of a video from YouTube, I reassembled the grids in the upright position using a grid guide costing $15 from a local retail store that really made it easy to attach the manifold. Reinstall the locking nut and place the complete grid assembly back into the tank. The whole process was fairly straight forward but took some patience. Most important thing is to replace each grid in the proper order. Total time spent about two hours.

I only had to replace one of my filters and I learned a valuable lesson. When disassembling the filter assembly, it should be placed upside down, and then remove the bottom grid holder nuts and remove the plastic assembly. This allows all the filters to remain in place and attached to the upper grid.
When I worked from the top, and disassembled the nuts everything fell apart and I had a terrible time figuring out how to get the grids back together. I also didn't realize that the bottom grid has a 1/8 diameter cut-out on the below the main return tube to the pump.
I put everything back together spun by 180 degrees, so that the return pipe and cutout were on opposite sides and had to start all over again.

My pool guy told me that there was diatomaceous earth being recirculated through the plumbing resulting in DE on the floor of the pool. I turned the pump off, opened the filter valve, released the filter belt, removed the filter lid and rubber seal, then pulled the grid assembly up and out of the filter unit (beware - it's heavy).
After unscrewing the two retaining nuts on top of the assembly, carefully pulling off the header unit and removing the thin, plastic grid alignment template, I pulled each grid from the assembly and hosed them down. In two of the grids, I had holes, one reasonably small but the other about the size of a mans thumbnail.
I'd never replaced the grids since owning the pool (over 12 years) so I purchased a complete set from INYO which turned up promptly and in good condition. Replacing the grids was simple (I always place the smaller grid first into the assembly, then each larger grid in order around the base unit) and then put the template back on to position the grids to ease the re-installation of the head unit.
I then screwed the two retaining screws back onto the top of the head unit to secure everything. At this point I coated the filter rubber seal with lubricant, carefully placed it onto the lip of the filter base and then replaced the entire grid assembly back into the filter base - I find it easier to have the filter seal positioned before installing the assembly.
I then placed the filter lid back onto it's base, I close the filter valve and carefully twist the lid so that the valve is readable in it's closed position from in front of the equipment, **open the valve again** and then tighten the filter belt that seals the filter lid from it's base.
Ensuring that the filter valve is open, I then turned on the pump, waited until water continuously poured out of the filter valve, closed the valve and waited for the system to purge itself of air (no more bubbles coming out of the pool's feed pipes). I ran the (variable) pump for about 6 hours (full speed) after which I checked and all DE earth had been removed from the floor.
I also noted the filter pressure (at various speeds) so that I can refer to these pressures knowing that when dirty, the pressures will increase giving me a good indication as to when they need to be cleaned again.

When I removed the old grid assembly it was totally caked with old DE dirt. Even after back washing. This is the first time disassembling. Brought home about a year ago. Ordered new grid due to DE dirt being pumped back into pool. Wish you offered a complete kit with all 8 grids. Did not understand what a partial grid was until I disassembled the filter unit. Partial means one of the grids a smaller. So I did not order the partial grid. Will have to order this part and disassembly filter again to install this part. Could not find clear instruction on reassembly of grids. Figured it out after about 1/2 an hour. Need to assemble it upside down. And the grids need to start outside of the bottom filter locator circle. There is this molded in circle in the filter locator. The tips of the filter need to be outside of this circle. For the grid to fit properly.
