I have a WFDS-6 pump and the motor needs to be replaced can i change the motor out to a variable speed instead of the two speed and if so which one.

Hi John, the correct variable speed replacement motor for the motor on a Pentair WhisperFlo model WFDS-6 pool pump is the ECM27SQU. You will also need a Pentair WhisperFlo seal kit when you replace your motor. We put together this Video on How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor which you may find helpful when you tackle this project.

I now have a WFE-6 connected to my pool. Does this Dual Speed come complete? Meaning, will I be able to just drop this in replacement of my old whiperflo? The schematics look exact but how about electrical? Will this be the same simple electrical hook-up?

Hello, Yes, this will fit exactly with your old whisperflo.

I want to upgrade to a dual speed from my 1.5hp single speed. Can I run the dual speed at low speed most of the time and only run at high speed for " special situations." I have a 32000 gal pool with no water features . We use
an injection chlorinator and have a robot vacuum so vacuuming is not an issue.
Thanks

Hi, Steve. Yes, you can operate a dual speed pump that way if your pool Total Dynamic Head (TDH) will allow the pump to provide sufficient water flow. You will either need a Toggle Switch or Controller - T10604R.

Would a pentair intellipro 2 VST be a lot more energy efficient than this pump? Trying to decide if it is a worthwhile upgrade to save energy

Hi. Yes, the IntelliPro 2 VST will be more efficient than this WFDS-6.

I want to replace my pump this year, I have an in-ground pool Approx 24,000 gallons, hayward aquarite salt generator cell Aqr15. With a pentair Clean and Clear cartridge filter 420 sqft . The existing piping on the return is two 1-1/2" inlets . the cartridge filter has 2" pipe in and out. But the discharge line is only 1-1/2" which feed two discharges into the pool.
Can you help me on the right pump to bye
Thanks Glenn

I think my earlier question was not clear. I have a 1.5 hp whisperflow pump, and would like to change the motor on it to a 1 hp.
1: Are the motors interchangeable?
2: Will I need a new impeller?
Reply
Steve- You will be able to drop down to a 1hp with no issues. For example; you could get the B982 motor .I would also recommend changing the impeller to match the hp of the motor, which would be 5074-27B. As always I change the seals while you've already got everything taken apart, which would be GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT.

My pump is oversized, can I change from a 1.5 hp motor to 1 hp on a whisperflow?
Reply
Hello Steve, Yes if you are over size you can go down to a smaller pump. The whisperflo is a high head pump. Which at 1hp will still operate very efficient

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
Reply
Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

How does the dual speed feature of this pump work?
Reply
Some dual speed pumps have a toggle switch in the back of the motor to change speeds manually, but many do not. Generally you would need to tie this dual speed pump into one of our dual speed pump timers/controllers. One of the more popular models is the Digital PE153 series. This timer has 3 functions: one to turn the pump on and off, a second auxiliary to switch from high speed to low speed, and then a third for any other piece of pool equipment. You may view these controllers through the following link: Intermatic Timers

IN 2017 we updated our pump and timer system to reduce our annual energy bill. In the past 3 years we have had to replace the 1.5 hp motors twice (bearings seized up) as well as miscellaneous internal impeller parts. This 2 phase unit is very energy efficient, but the cost to replace motors, bearings, impellers and and such along with the service and labor fees to continuously repair it have made this unit the most expensive pool pump we have owned in 30+ years. We WERE longtime Pentair customers... NO MORE!
