I would stick with the super pump personally. It's going to be a more durable pump. If you're trying to switch to a variable speed pump I would still stick with the super pump variable speed model.

I have a 1.5hp single speed motor that is probably over 5 years old and is probably reaching the end of its life expectancy. Why does a pool pump need a variable speed, the pumping conditions are constant, so what would cause the variation?

I'm trying to decide if this pump would make sense for recirculation in my 450 gallon Jacuzzi hot tub. i was using a very small 1/3 HP (I think) pump but I am not sure if at 450 rpm it might not still be too big and wste more energy than another 1/3HP ordinry pump would. Do you have any data on RPM versus GPM and watts?

Hi Nick, I would not recommend this pump to circulate the water in a 450 gallon hot tub, the Waterway Iron Might Circulation Pump is your best option for such an application.

I presently have very noisy 12 year old Hayward Northstar SP4010X15NS 1.5HP pump for my 16K Gallon Pebble Tec saltwater pool. I also have a Hayward C3020 Cartridge Filter, a Hayward H200 heater, and a Barracuda Zodiac pool cleaner which has it's own PVC line in the wall of the pool, The bottom drain ties in to my one and only skimmer, which goes on to the pump. So, even with the Zodiac running, I probably have less than 30 ft. of head.
Is this Variable speed pump a good replacement for me?

The pump will not prime. We have it hooked up according to instructions and the computer programed, have troubleshot everything we could think of and it just won't prime. We've been pool owners for 40 + years and have hooked up and serviced pumps all these years and never had this issue. Any suggestions? Is this a problem common with this unit?

I'm replacing a pump that was installed by a previous owner. I can't read the nameplate, but it looks like a Hayward Super Pump. The motor is an A. O. Smith UST1102. The pump and filter system worked well, but would like to reduce operating costs so I'm considering the variable speed option.
Would this pump work? The pool is small, 8500 gallons, with a main drain, skimmer, sand filter and three return jets. Don't know the underground pipe configuration and can't calculate head.

Hi Len, This PL1615 Variable Speed Pump would be a suitable replacement for a 1 HP Super Pump but I would suggest the PL2605 PureLine Prime Variable Speed Pump as it is a drop in replacement for the Hayward Super Pump meaning no re-plumbing. If you go with the PL1615 you will have some minor re-plumbing, nothing major but the inlet and outlet ports are not in the exact location as the Super Pump.

Current system uses 1.65 -- very short distance from pumps to pool 12,000 inground. Will the 1.5 be sufficient? Can it be controlled with a Wink/ Home Automation?

Can this be set up to work with my aqualink RS8 controller? In other words, I do not want to have to go to the filter pump to change from spa, to heat to filter.

Hi Chuck, Yes this variable speed pump can work with an AquaLink Control System. The speeds would be programmed on the controller of the pump and then the AquaLink would be set to turn the pump on and off. For example on the AquaLink you would set the pump to turn on at 8AM and turn off at 8PM and on the controller you would set that from 8AM to 2PM the pump run at 2,220 RPM's and from 2PM to 8PM the pump would run at 3,450 RPM's. Also you can change to spa mode from the AquaLink and program the pump to run at the high speed when you switch to Spa Mode.

I currently have a 3/4 HP pentair super flow with a pentair tagulus ta-50 sand filter. I have 1 1/2 inch plumbing. Would this pump or the Raypak Variable Speed Pool Pump 1.65 THP - PS165VSP. I know with the raypak I would need to use a reducer.

Yes, either of these variable speed pump models would work. You may need to modify the plumbing a bit and only use the highest rpm setting on the pump at a similar rpm to your current pump.

Lennox H. recommended a Mighty Might for re-circulation in a 450 gallon hot tub. Looking at it and most re-circulation pumps I don't find data to guarantee they will maintain the 15 GPM required to keep my Raypak 11KW spa heater running. These pump curves show 45 gpm at 1600 rpm so it would "seem" at 750 RPM (its lowest speed) it probably gets to 15 or 20 which "should" work and would give me the ability to increase speed if needed to maintain heat. Any data at 750 RPM will be appreciated.

Hi, Nick. The Mighty Pump is only for re-circulation which is a low flow application. When heating the spa or using the jets a higher flow pump would be needed. We do not have any flow data at 750 RPM because the flow will sufficient.

Hi Chris, If you have a 1.5 Hayward NorthStar Pump then I would suggest the 1.65 HP PureLine Prime Variable Speed Pump as the GPM output rating of the Prime and the Northstar are comparable. We wrote an Article on The Cost to Operate a Pump which goes into to detail on how to determine the cost to operate a Single Speed Pump Vs. a Variable Speed pump. In the example in the article a 1.5 HP Single Speed pump costs about $1,100 per year to operate vs. $500 per year on the variable speed pump.

I have a 36000 gallon pool with sand filter and a 1.5 HP 220V Hayword pump which I run for 3 hours a day. This may not seem much but the pool is kept exceptionally clear using about 350 grams of HTH granular chlorine a day and adjusting PH whenever necessary. I am interested in a variable speed pump. Hi Patrick, On a large pool like your 36,000 gallon pool I would suggest the PureLine Prime 2.7 HP Variable Speed Pump this pump is nice because it will allow you to dial the HP all the way up to 2.7 HP when you have demanding conditions, but for most instances you will be running at a very low HP for circulation thus saving you on your operational costs. We wrote an Article on How Much it Costs to Operate a Pool Pump which will show you how to calculate your operational costs of a Variable Speed Pump vs. an Single Speed Pump. In the example in the article a single speed 1.5 HP pumps costs $1,062 per year to operate where a Variable Speed Pump costs $496 per year to operate. These #'s do vary when you start to look at how expensive your energy costs are and how long you run your pump per year.

Hi, To give you an accurate flow rating we would need to know your feet of head. We have a good article here on how to determine feet of head. A standard pool usually is at 30' of head which would mean this pump would output 65 GPM at 40' of head. If you are only using this for a spa then you would need to determine how many jets and how many GPM each jet requires. A good rule of thumb on spa jets is 12 GPM per jet so if you had 10 jets then you would need a pump that can output 120 GPM at the high speed. With this being said I would suggest the PureLine Prime PL2605 or PL2606 Variable Speed Pump and I would pair this with a Hayward C4030 Cartridge Filter.

had a brush fire yesterday in my backyard and my pump and motor melted, along with a lot of wiring , My pool is 28* 12.5 grecian shaped, around 10500 gallons. No extra water features. 1 skimmer, one main drain (that is pipped to the skimmer ) and 2 returns. the main drain is around 40 feet from the pump location. 200 lb sand filter .
I think my old pump was oversized at 1.5 horsepower, and really like the 1.5 HP VSP. Is it a good fit?

Follow up question, since the VSP has its own controller, do I bypass the manual timer for the pump? Currently the timer controls the pump and the SWG. Do i need to provide two feeds now, one for the timer/SWG and one for the pump?

Hello Mark - The timer function on the pump allows you to bypass your current timer. If you don't want to completely bypass the timer, you can connect the PL1615 to the line in terminals on your timer. This ensures the pump always has power. The salt system can stay connected to the load terminals on the timer. That way you can set the timer to turn the salt system on/off at a specified time during the operation of the pump.

Hi, Gaetano. Based on the info found in the 2-Green Manual, Fault 11 is a Keypad error code. To try to resolve this remove power from the motor for 60 seconds and re-wire the motor to see if the fault code goes away. If it does not go away then you will have to replace the motor.

Had a 1.5 hp WaterAce with Emerson motor, but impeller broke. I was looking into moving to a variable speed pump to save on energy costs. The pool is 16x32xaD (aD=approx. 5ft), water lines are 1 main, 1 skimmer, 1 cleaner drain on side of pool & 6 return jets, with approx. 90ft total linear feet of run to pool equipment. I've been looking at the Pentair Intelliflow 2 VST, but how does this one compare, and is it fairly simple to connect to my existing 2" incoming lines?

Hi Michael, For your set up I like the PL2605 PureLine Prime Variable Speed Pump as it is a bit more powerful than the PL1615 and based on your pool specs. you would need the PL2605. The Prime is comparable to the Intelliflo. The PL2605 is a 1.65 HP and we also have the PL2606 PureLine Prime which has a Max HP of 2.7 HP which is the same as the Intelliflo. I like the Prime as it has a AO Smith/Century motor which is the same motor as the Pentair Intelliflo.

How do you wire a variable speed pump to operate for both a pool and a spa. We have a timer which turns on the pump and runs the pool heater at a higher temp and changes the valve positions to direct the flow to the spa. We would probably have the pool speed set for 1750 but the spa would require a higher speed.

Hi, Joe. You can only wire a vs pump with a pool and spa setting if you're using a compatible external control. Unfortunately, this pump is not compatible with any external automated controller. This pump will have to be manually controlled.

Bought PL1615 and fittings were not exact but we finally got parts to make it work. It is doing great but I manually turn on everyday. I finally got the time set. How do you recommend we set for a schedule? Does it go for a lower speed first couple hours then higher later? Just not sure what schedule to have it on? let alone set it to do those different speeds etc.? Live in AZ.

Jason, Every pool is different. The idea behind a variable speed is to run the pump at the lowest rpm setting. The only time you would want to run at full speed is when you are chemically treating the pool.

Hi, Dale. This 1.5 H.P Variable Speed Pool Pump - PL1615 will not be a suitable replacement for a Jandy Stealth JHP1.5 if we're comparing performance and plumbing. However, in order to find out if this pump will be able to meet your pool needs, you will need to calculate the Total Dynamic Head (TDH) of your pool using Gauges or you Plumbing. Once you've calculated the TDH, use the PL1615 Performance Curve to determine the flow rate at the various RPM's.

I currently have a Pentair 350097 pump. My pool is roughly 15'x30' with depth ranging from 3' to 6'. There are two skimmers and a bottom drain. We also have a booster pump for our automatic vacuum. Is this a suitable replacement or should I just do a like for like? The pump only runs for 4-5 hours/day in season (Mar-Nov). Then 3-4 hours a day off season.

Hi, Andy. This pump is NOT manufactured by Hayward, but Pureline. This pump does not need an external timer, it can be wired directly to your breaker or remove the trippers on your timer, turn it on so that it continually powers the pump motor.

Hi Bo, Yes this would be a good variable speed pump replacement for a Hayward Power Flo Matrix however this pump can only be wired 240V so you will need to have 240V available. You will also have to do a little bit of re-plumbing.

On this 1.5 H.P Variable Speed Pool Pump what are the specs as far a max and min amp draw? I have existing wiring of 12 gauge wire for my old pump (Hayward PowerFlo Martix) it can be converted to the correct voltage but i want to make sure the wire is thick enough. the pool powers up but since there is no install/wiring guide with the pump i want to make sure i get the correct cable. Hi Bo, At 3450 RPM's the Pure Flow Draws 5 amps, at 2350 RPM's it draws 1.4 amps, at 1500 RPM's it draws .45 amps and at 750 RPM's it draws .15 amps. In regards to the wire size for runs 0' - 25' you can use 14 AWG wire and runs above 25' we suggest 12 AWG wire. We do have a Guide On How to Wire a PL1615 on 230V as well as Video on How to Program a PL1615 Pump which you should find helpful for your installation. There is also this Installation Guide for the PL1615 Pump.

Hi Ben, The PureLine Pure Flow variable speed pump will allow you to adjust the speed of the pump through a full range 3450 RPM's all the way down to 750 RPM. With a variable speed pump, you will see a huge decrease in your operational costs, up to 80%. It would be fine to put this pump under a deck. All the programming and timer features are done directly on the controller which is mounted on the pump. Normally you will set this once at startup and the pump will turn on and off based on the schedule you have set, there is not a remote control for this pump.

I have a above ground pool. Approx 9k gallons. Heat pump. 11/2 inch ports. Current 2 speed died. Would this pump work. Or is it to much. If it would work, then as far as electric goes.
Looks like electric needs are for 230v. Can I tie into the 230 running to the heat pump or do I need a separate line.

I currently have a Speck S90, 1 1/2 HP pump. Deciding whether to repair, replace with same, or give this VS a try. I have a salt system, using 2" PVC piping. I realize I might to adjust the piping to align with the VS pump, and would need new unions, but think the potential energy savings will be worth it. Is this VS a good alternative to the S90? And would I use the Part # 21063-154-000 unions?

I just ordered this vs pump along with a Pure Line salt generater. Will I need a separate timer switch for the generator? I did not see in the specifications that this pump is capable of controlling a one. If I need a timer, how do I synchronize the two? Would there be an ideal speed to run the pump?

Hi, Brent. A timer is not required. Both the pump and chlorine generator can be wired directly to the breaker. The chlorine generator is equipped with a flow switch which will allow it to begin to make chlorine once the proper amount of flow is achieved.

I want to purchase a pump for my 500 gallon jacuzzi which has four jets. It is home made from cement blocks and tiled throughout. My previous pump which had rusted away due to weather conditions was a 1.5 hp two speed 230 volt pump. The pump is situated about 30 feet of PVC away. 1.5 inch pvc piping is used from the bottom drain to the pump and the pump is located about two feet higher than the water level. Our pool motor B2848 ceased up and our Pac-Fab Pinnacle has a couple of hair line cracks and I would like to junk it all for a variable speed pump/motor. our pool is 15,000 gallons and our head piping is 29ft to pump and 29ft return line to pool. Hello Kelly. The Pureline 1.5 HP Variable Speed Pool Pump is a low to medium head pump. The Pentair Challenger Pool Pump, as shown in the photo provided, is a medium to high head (HIGH FLOW) pump. While the total horsepower of both pumps is identical, the flow characteristics of the Pureline Pump will not match those of the Challenger. If you have a spa with a spillover or other water features you may notice a drop in volume, especially at lower speeds. The Pentair Superflo VS EC-342001 is a more comparable replacement. Hello Patrick. A variable-speed pool pump/motor is the most energy-efficient option available. A variable-speed motor has the ability to operate at multiple RPMs (900-3450 RPM). A conventional copper-wound single-speed motor (3450 RPM only) or dual-speed (3450-1725 RPM). Reducing the motor's RPMs conserves electricity, lowering the pump's operating cost. If you wished to replace your entire pump, the Hayward Super Pump VS would be a compatible replacement. Hi Rich, this would probably be a great replacement for you. What is the voltage going to your equipment pad? This 1.5 H.P Variable Speed Pool Pump - PL1615 only runs on 230 volts, so you might have to do some rewiring if your current pump runs on 120 volts. What model is your existing pump? The PL1615 is a great replacement for medium-head pumps. Be sure anything you replace has operating characteristics that are similar or better than your existing pump. Let us know what you currently have (and watch this How to Select an Inground Pool Pump video) to be sure it will be perfect for your pool.

For my inground heat pump heated pool. Time to replace my leaking seal motor with something more efficient. 145,000btus: what GPM is necessary to keep the heater running. Right now I run it 6hrs straight and it is 88 degrees, time to swim @9,am...Runs 4am-10am. The pool is your typical 12X29 not a deep pool per say... Mechanical timer.

Hi Barry, a variable-speed pump is an excellent option to save you on your electric bill or you can also just change out the motor on your current pump with a variable-speed motor. All pool heaters are different, but the majority of them require 20 to 30 gallons per minute of flow to operate.

Hi Barry, you can easily get 20-30GPM of flow at a lower speed on this pump as long as you don't have too much head in your system (60 feet of head is about the max for this pump - see our guide here on How To Calculate The Amount Of Head In Your Pool). Note that the performance of the pump (GPM) is also dependant upon the type/condition of your filter (is it clean/dirty). Installation may require intake and discharge plumbing adjustments as these ports may not align exactly with the existing plumbing. Quick Disconnect Unions PL1643 1.5" MIP x 1.5" Slip 1.5" Male Threaded Pool Pump Union or Long Union 1.5" MIP x 2" Slip Socket Long Union can facilitate installation.
