Hi- Looking to replace my pool motor. Current specs of the one I have:a Part # 7-K56ab47a01-05 Cat #B2979 Type CXCP FR Y56J HP 2-2.5

A  Answered on 2/4/2021 by InyoPools Product Specialist Hector F.

Hi Larry, the correct single speed replacement motor for your motor Cat #B2979 is the 5389X. When replacing a pool motor we do suggest a Seal Kit. Could you send us a few photos of your pump so we can suggest the proper seal kit? If so then please take a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos or quickest using our live online chat feature. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation for your seal kit.

We may however that will depend on the model name or number of the front pump wet end housing that the motor is actually attached to. If you cannot locate that, you can send us an image to upload@inyopools.com for review.

The Jacuzzi pump is label 3.0 HP, however the motor is BN61 with no Horsepower on label. 8.5/2.8 amps. 230 Volts, of course, Is there some sort of service factor that will enable this motor to work beyond 2.0 HP? Should I stick to BN61 or bump it up to BN62?

A  Answered on 6/20/2018 by InyoPools Product Specialist Andy O.

Hello Ervin- If the pump is a 3.0 spl then this is the correct motor. The BN61 only comes in this HP and I would not recommend going up in size as you may have to change parts on the pump.

Hi, Rshay. This BN61 motor is not the correct replacement motor, you will need the Century B2979 motor.

Hi, Tom K. I was not able to cross reference the AO Smith # 7-184834-02 to this motor or any other replacement. If you can email a picture of the motor label to upload@inyopools.com, we can locate a replacement.

Can you direct me to the proper hi low switch for this motor?

A  Answered on 1/18/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Unfortunately the manufacturer does not offer the switch for the 2 speed 220v motors any longer. If you already have a 220 volt timer (on/off) you would need an Intermatic T106R to switch from high to low speed. If you do not have a timer currently you would need the T10604R which is a 220v on/off timer and a high/low timer.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

What is Service Factor?

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.
