How does a 1.5hp have a better flow rate than a 1hp if they both have the same lift and rpm?

A  Answered on 6/9/2021 by InyoPools Product Specialist Craig C.

Hello Jack.  The difference in flow rate can be attributed to the difference in impeller sizes.  The 1.5HP model has a larger impeller which provides more water movement at the same RPM.

Can I use a 2hp motor with 1/1/2 piping. I need to upgrade for my fountain and water spouts?

A  Answered on 5/7/2020 by InyoPools Product Specialist Alex V.

John, While you can use 1.5" plumbing with this pump, you will be restricting the flow which will make the pump work harder.

If I change all the piping above ground level to 2", about 10' will this help the pump to create a better suction?

    • Commented on 5/9/2020 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi John, Yes if you can add 2" pipe on the suction side of the pump then that will help even if it is just the section above ground.

Hi, Harry. Hayward has the PowerFlo Matrix Pump - SP1593 which will be a great option for an above ground pool your size.

I have a Hayward Super Pump SP2615X20 that the pump motor locked up. I purchased a new Century Centurion B130 from a local store and installed it on my Super Pump. It's working ok and there are no leaks. What seal kit should I purchase to replace the shaft seal and other seals? Thanks!

A  Answered on 5/1/2018 by InyoPools Product Specialist Hector F.

The correct complete seal kit would be the GOKIT3 for a chlorine pool and the GOKIT3SALT is for a salt pool.

We have the following 2 HP motor nameplate information, does it identify the pumps? I'm told the pumps are becoming obsolete, could you recommend a replacement? AO Smith SQ1202 (K48N2PA105C4), Serial 36009FM AO Smith (C48M2N111A3), Serial 30508FM Thank you, Tom Goshulak

A  Answered on 4/20/2018 by InyoPools Product Specialist Hector F.

The first motor is showing as an SQ1202 and the second is showing as a UST1202. If you need assistance locating the complete pump and are not sure of those models you can always email images of those to We, unfortunately, cannot use serial numbers.

A  Answered on 9/10/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Chuck Milligan. The Hayward TriStar Pump - SP32152EE or is the what I'll recommend for the Northstar Pump SP4015X202.

I have a 9 year old Hayward super pump SP2600z9. This seems to be the same pump but mine seems to have 1 1/2 ports(and 1 1/2 piping after) . Did they change the default port size on these? The motor is having more and more trouble starting and the threads on the basket plug ports will not keep the plugs tight anymore. Is this the best substitute(most comparable). Thanks

A  Answered on 4/6/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Scott W.

The older Super Pumps have 2" ports and the newer Super Pumps have 1.5" ports so if you have 1.5" plumbing the new Super Pump would fit your system perfect.

I have around 90 feet of head but my pipes are only 1 1/2 inch. Which pump would you recommend and what HP?

A  Answered on 3/27/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Tony. A pump that can perform at 90 feet of will have 2" ports. You will need a high performance pump but to determine the horsepower we will need know know the desired flow rate.

Hi, Gerald. The Hayward TriStar 2 HP, Max Rated Pump - SP3215X20 is the pump that would replace the obsolete Northstar pump.

A  Answered on 3/16/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, AJ. The Super Pump is not a good replacement for the pump you have. I would recommend the Hayward TriStar 2 HP, Energy Efficient, Full Rated Pump - SP3220EE.

Upgrading from an EC65A with a 3/4 hp pump to a EC75A with a 2 hp pump. What else will I need to replace? Are the fittings the same? Will I need to swap anythng except the filter and pump?

A  Answered on 5/30/2016 by InyoPools Product Specialist Alex V.

Hello, The main thing you will need to consider is that the 2HP pump has 2" ports. The 3/4HP you're replacing likely has 1.5" ports. Other that the pump connections, everything else should be the same.

Might have to replace my Hayward 1.5hp pump. Might go with a 2hp just to improve circulation. What is the advantage of a 2 speed pump vs single speed?

A  Answered on 6/30/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Hector F.

The advantage of the 2 speed is that it offers a more energy efficient option. The low speed draws less amperage hence using less electricity. Also please confirm with one of our techs or a licensed contractor, that the gallons per minute rating is compatible between both the model of the filter and pump before you make any changes.

J, You can replace it with a dual or variable speed pump for extreme energy savings or stay with the exact model you have. Super Pump 2 HP Dual Speed or Hayward Max-Flo VS Variable Speed Pump

Bob, The RS Series Pump line is the same as the Hayward Super II EE Pump. The Hayward Super 2 EE Pump 2 HP Single Speed model will be the direct replacement for the RS2000 model.

What is the speed of this pump? It indicates single speed but no RPM speed indicated.

A  Answered on 12/22/2014 by InyoPools Product Specialist Brian M.

Good Day. The speed of a single speed motor is 3450 RPM. This is taken from the U.S. Department of Energy web site :  The two-speed pump uses an induction motor and is basically two motors in one with a standard 3,450 rpm (full-speed) motor and a1,725 rpm (half-speed) option.

How many hours per day should I run my pump?

A  Answered on 10/8/2013 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

There are many factors to consider; bather load, gallons of water, pump horsepower, type and size of filter just to name a few. A good guideline is 8-10 hours a day. On the cooler days and early and late season, you can cut the run time down to 4-6 hours because there is usually less swimmers and cooler water requires less chemicals. In peak season, when it is the hottest, raising the run time to 10-12 hours per day will help to keep the pool clean and circulating during it’s time of heaviest use.
