You do not need to replace the entire assembly valve to replace the handle. You can either take apart the top valve assembly and replace the handle or replace the top valve assembly as you have suggested. More commonly people replace the entire top for it is easier and also replaces the small parts inside of the top vave assembly.

Warren, this assembly comes with almost everything you need to do a full tune up of your valve. I would suggest purchasing the SPX0714L Cover O-ring separately.

I have a slight leak out my backwash hose while running the filter. I also can't seem to draw more than 10 psi. Would this be caused by a bad gasket or wear in my vari-flo valve? I've run air pressure thru the pipes and have seen no evidence of an obstruction.

Hi JT. Yes, if the gasket is not seal properly that can lead to the valve leaking and a lower than normal pressure reading. This cover assembly does not come with the Cover O-ring (SPX0714L) which I will also recommend replacing.

The spider gasket going to be what is leaking. That top assembly is going to be the easiest way to replace that gasket. You will remove the screws, take the old top assembly out and put the new one in its place.

If there is no water leaking out of the valve, the handle rotates smoothly then the valve is likely okay. Clearing a pool up that uses a sand filter can be challenging. Kill then vacuum out any dead organic material and balance the water as you go. Sometimes clarifiers and flocculants assist as well.

I replaced the key cover handle assembly. I think I put it on wrong or something. Water flows out the backwash when its in the filter position. The filter hasn't needed to be back washed in 4 weeks. The water is very cloudy. The chemicals are balanced. I've taken it apart several times. Bugs and junk is flowing back in the pool. My sand is clean.The laterals have also been replaced. Can you send a picture of what the key cover sits on so I know which way it goes? I lined up the notches.

Nancy, I do not have a photo but the assembly can only be installed one way. If you notice, there is a notch/cut out on the key assembly that has to line up with the same notch/cut out on the valve body.

Is there anything not included with the assembly? My filter is a Pro Series S-166T. The water leaks a small amount out the waste line, so I figure it is the spider gasket. But, I read that Hayward does not sell replacement gaskets for this model and they are pre-glued into it in the factory. If that is my real issue, should I buy this? I don't know that I will have assistance to just replace the part with the gasket (spx0714CA).

Why does the how to video describe the spider valve replacement SP714CA? The advertised model comes already assembled with that part. I have already broken two spider valve replacement parts trying to get the spring compressed to put on the handle. The usual signs that a multiport valve is malfunctioning is leakage from the waste pipe while the pump is set to normal filter mode. Do you see that symptom or any other water leaks around your pump and filter system?
