What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Can you direct me to the proper hi low switch for this motor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/18/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Unfortunately the manufacturer does not offer the switch for the 2 speed 220v motors any longer. If you already have a 220 volt timer (on/off) you would need an Intermatic T106R to switch from high to low speed. If you do not have a timer currently you would need the T10604R which is a 220v on/off timer and a high/low timer.

How can I tell whether or not my motor is a dual or single speed?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/18/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Most dual speed motors will have a toggle switch that will allow you to adjust the motor speed to either high or low. Another way to tell if your motor is dual speed is by looking at the RPM's on the motor specifications label. If there are two RPM's listed such as: 1725/3450 then motor is dual speed. If there is only one RPM, then motor is single speed.

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
 Reply

A  Answered on 2/16/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

Is this the proper pump to replace my pump in the photo? Would there be any gain in moving to a higher HP pump? Thank you!

Hi Paul, the correct replacement motor for the motor included in your photo is the 5112-271. You will also need a Hayward Tristar seal kit when you replace your motor assuming you do indeed have the Tristar complete pool pump. We put together this Video on How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor which you may find helpful when you tackle this project.

I am not sure if I need a Century B2984 or B2983 based upon previous comments? I would like the Amps to be 3.5 at low speed. Do I also need a 2 speed switch and gasket seal with this purchase? Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi Tim, yes, this is the correct replacement motor for the motor included in your photo and the hi/lo switch is listed in the motor details. You will also need a Jandy Stealth SHPM shaft seal when you replace your motor. We put together this Video on How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor which you may find helpful when you tackle this project.

Hello Brian.  Yes, the Century B2983 will replace your existing motor.  At a minimum, the shaft seal should be replaced along with any rubber seals or o-rings that are a part of the wet end assembly: Such as the seal plate gasket/o-ring, and diffuser o-ring.  The shaft seal and gaskets/ o-rings are specific to the Pump Manufacturer and Pump Model.  If you could provide additional information or pictures of the pump itself inclusive of any labeling that may be on the pump housing and wide angles of the pump, we could determine the appropriate shaft seal and o-ring kit for this project.   Century 1.5 HP Square Flange 56Y Dual Speed Full Rate Motor - B2983

I am sure this motor is the right replacement for my Hayward pump. But all the labels on the pump are too faded to read. But the motor label is identical. All that is on the pump is "Hayward". I am attaching photos with the hope you may be able to recommend a seal and O-ring/gasket kit. And lastly, do you have a recommended full pump & motor replacement (1.5HP 2-speed) that will fit with existing collars?\ where I can just unwire the old one, unscrew the old pump, and slap in a new one? Thanks.

Yes, the B2983 motor is identical to the one you need to replace on your Hayward TriStar SP3200X Series Pump.  Here is the Tune Up Kit Hayward - GOKIT81 for you, which contains all of the o-rings and the new motor shaft seal as well.  Hayward does still make (and we do carry) the TriStar pumps, though we can't guarantee that it would be a simple drop-in replacement for you; you may need to rework some plumbing.

What an awesome response! Thank you. As you can see from the photos, the suction side of the pump is slammed-plumbed. It will take some work to remove some fittings. Can you send me a link to your recommended tristar pump and the price please? Wow, you people are great!

Will this dual speed motor replace a single speed motor on a Jandy FHPM1.5 pump? What parts would I need to convert this pump to dual speed? ( I sent the same question for the single speed motor by mistake)

Hello Paul.  The Century Motors 1.5 HP Dual Speed Full Rate Motor model B2983 is compatible with the Jandy FloPro FHPM Series Pump (2008-Present).   It is recommended that the motor shaft seal and backplate o-ring be replaced concurrent with the new motor.   Pump Seal, Extra Heavy Duty PS4280 (Saltwater Pools) - PS-4280    Backplate O-ring   To convert to the dual speed motor it will be necessary to install a second timer such as the Intermatic Dual Speed Timer model T106R.  Pool Timer Dual Speed Pump Timer - T106R   For manual operation the Two-Speed Toggle Switch Assy can be utilized.  Two-Speed Toggle Switch - Lo/Off/Hi

I need to replace my motor. Is this the correct motor? Also, what seals do I need to replace?

A  Answered on 8/30/2023 by InyoPools Product Specialist Jacob F.

Hello, the Hayward 1-1/2 HP Maxrate Dual Speed Tristar Motor, 208-230v- SPX3210Z2MER would be the exact replacement motor, but you could also use the Century 1.5 HP Square Flange 56Y Dual Speed Full Rate Motor - B2983 if that is your preference. The seal kit for your pump will be the Saltwater Tune Up Kit Hayward TriStar/EcoStar - GOKIT81SALT, and the toggle switch for both motor options will be Toggle Switch and Canopy Kit for 56Y 2-Speed - 2512558-001.

We ordered the B983 mortar to replace ours but did not get a gasket kit to go with it. Can you tell me the correct part number to order?

 Reply

A  Answered on 9/27/2023 by InyoPools Product Specialist Jacob F.

Hello, the gasket kit will be associated with your pump housing, not the motor; if you are able to provide me the model of your pump housing, I would be able to provide you a recommendation for the correct gasket kit.

We can’t find any other wording or labels, hopefully these pictures will give enough clarity to help figure out which gasket kit will be needed.

Thank you. The pump is the Hayward TriStar SP3200X Series. The Hayward TriStar, EcoStar Pool Pump Seal Kit - Model GOKIT81 or Saltwater Tune Up Kit Hayward TriStar/EcoStar - GOKIT81SALT for salt pools is recommended.
