What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

That is the correct motor replacement and we advise to replace the shaft seal, back plate o-ring and the diffuser/impeller hardware. You may need the old or new style shaft seal. If the serial number on your front pump housing reads with a Pxxxxx or earlier then you would use the old style part number 5020-086. If not then use the new style part number 5020-087.

Peter, If you live in California, you will need to replace your single speed motor with a 2-speed motor in order to be in compliance with your local laws. You can replace your B859 with the B985. Please note that the B985 motor will only operate on 230v. You will either need a 2-speed switch or a 2-speed timer to operate the high and low speed. Also, be sure to change your shaft seal when you replace the motor.

Lastly, you can also use a variable speed motor part number ECM27SQU which will not any toggle switch or secondary timer.

Hi, Craig. There is NOT a bearing kit available, the bearing P/N's are 62032RS (OSE) and 6304 (SE). You can use this B859 or P/N SPX3215Z1MR. You will also need the TriStar Tune Up Kit - GOKIT81.

I currently have a 7-77476 century motor on my pentair whisperflo WF-28 pump that's getting loud from bearing noise. I've can you tell me what bearings fit in this motor and if they are different sizes which one goes on front verses the rear of the motor? Additionally, what would be a suitable replacement? Thanks G

Hi James, yes this is the correct replacement motor for your motor part number 193994. When replacing a pool motor we do suggest a seal kit. Could you send us a few photos of your pump so we can suggest the proper seal kit? If so then please take a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. We will also need the serial number. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos or quickest using our live online chat feature. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation for your seal kit.

Hi, I walked out to my 3 year old pool pump today to see that the breaker had tripped. When I reset it and the pump tried to start it just made a loud menacing buzz so I shut it off quickly. The motor housing is very hot. I believe this motor is the correct replacement but I would like to confirm before ordering. Please see attached pics. Also, I was thinking I might want to test the motor by detaching the pump section to see if maybe the pump is the problem.

Yes, the Century 2.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Up Rate Motor - B2859 is correct for replacing the motor in the image with part number 7-193987-24. The pump model on the labels also confirms PHPM2.0 this pump offers different shaft seals, you will need to verify the serial number on the wet-end of the housing to select the correct shaft seal shown here http://www.inyopools.com/pool_parts_jandy_plus_hp_2006_current.aspx The Backplate O-Ring R0446300 and Diffuser/Impeller Hardware - R0446500 should be replaced too.

Hi Michael, this is the correct single speed replacement motor for your motor part number 193987. It is also recommended to replace the seals when replacing a motor. We would just need to know the model name or number of the front pump wet end housing the motor attaches to in order to locate those for you. You can also upload images of that in a reply here if you need.

I need to replace a 2HP pentair 177476-20 pump motor. Y56 square frame. 3450 rpm 230/115v 11.2/22.4a. It may be a 20 years old. All the specs seem to align with the B859 except they all say the 2 HP has a service factor of 1.0. BUT The label on my motor says the service factor is 1.15. So a 2hp x 1.15 = 2.25 HP. I think I need to upsize the replacement to meet the 2.25 effective HP. The 2.5 HP replacement its only the 230/240v not duel voltage. Do I go with the B859 or upsize?

Hello.  The Century Motor Single Speed model B2859 is NOT a replacement for your Century Dual Speed 1.65 SFHP motor.  The Century Motors 1.0HP (1.65 SFHP)  Dual Speed Full Rate Motor model B2982 is a compatible replacement.  It is recommended that the motor shaft seal, seal plate gasket, and diffuser O-ring be replaced at the same time.  If your current Pentair pump is a Whisperflo, the GOKIT32 contains these parts.  If your Pentair pump is a Superflo, the GOKIT78 contains these parts.  Century 1.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Dual Speed Full Rate Motor - B2982   Tune Up Kit Pentair/Purex Whisperflo - GOKIT32    Tune Up Kit Pentair SuperFlo/Sta-Rite SuperMax - GOKIT78

My motor runs for a few minutes and then shuts off. It does this all day long, on for 5 mins, off for a few mins. I changed the mechanical timer, no difference. I changed the motor capacitor, no difference. Do I need to replace the motor or are there other parts that might be causing this? If so, is this the correct replacement for the motor? And what seals, etc. do I need to complete the swap? Thanks!
