The Century® 1.0 HP Full Rate Dual Speed Motor (B2982 / B982) is a premium replacement motor for inground pool and spa pumps. With dual-speed capability, it allows you to maximize efficiency by running on low speed for daily circulation and high speed for heavy cleaning or peak demand.
⚠️ Note: This motor is shipped without the Hi-Lo switch. The switch may be purchased separately (Part #2512558-001).

What is Service Factor?

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Can you direct me to the proper hi low switch for this motor?

Unfortunately the manufacturer does not offer the switch for the 2 speed 220v motors any longer. If you already have a 220 volt timer (on/off) you would need an Intermatic T106R to switch from high to low speed. If you do not have a timer currently you would need the T10604R which is a 220v on/off timer and a high/low timer.

I have Jandy PHPM 1.0 pump with single speed motor. Would this be the correct replacement motor to upgrade to dual speed?

Hi Jeff, The 2-Green 3/4 HP Full Rate Square Flange 230V Motor w/ Digital Controller (B2980T) or the (B2981T) which would be the 115 volt version would be the correct dual speed motor for your model pump. It has a built-in controller and timer so you do not have to purchase and install an additional timer that is needed to operate a dual speed motor.

Pros: Watts, noise, flow
Cons: Not self installing?
WOW! Works like a charm. I went from a single speed motor pulling 1800 watts to this one which on low speed pulls 300 watts. Thats like going from an oven on broil to 3 light bulbs. Plus its so quiet that I have to visually check to see if its running. Great flow even at this low wattage pull and noise level. Installing this to my pump cost (in total) about $350 including the orings and rebuild of the wet end. I will make that up in 3-4 months on PG&E rates. Quickest ROI on a green investment EVER! A note on timing: AO Smith makes this motor and are in the process of selling their pump group to Regal Beloit. This motor is not used by any major manufacturer of pumps as they all want the mark up for variable speed and computer controlled pumps. This motor has a good chance of being discontinued as part of the acquisition. If you are looking to buy, buy soon (depends on inventory levels and details of acquisition).

So let me start by saying the shipping was fast and the box had little wear and tear from shipping. I went from a Pentair whipserflo wfe-6 single speed 1.5HP at 220v 9amp or so according to the specs on their website and the label, to this dual speed 1HP at 220v and will be running at 1.4amps according to the label. Now I was running 6hrs a day on the pentair equals about 11.9kwh @ .117 cents for 30 days is about $40. Now running this new pump 9hrs per day 2.8kwh for 30 days @ .117 cent kwh is about about $10. Now you see why Im excited about this. Now the pentair has a new dual speed wfe-6 and the motor they use looks exactly the same as this one except it has the wet end attached to it.
