Hi Bob, As long as it does not leak then you could leave the old broken off plug in.

would the plug you have fit sp15802 x15 will sp1700 series also fit it ?

The preferred drain plug for the Hayward SP1580 series is the 1/4" Drain Plug with Gasket - SPX1700FG

We took the main plug out of the bottom motor for the winter and we misplaced it, I got on this website and the chat person sent me the link and the part came in a few short days. Great working with a company that knows what they are talking about.

Pros: no rust, easy to use, well made
T recommend you change your filter poly plugs every season to keep leaks at bay. This particular poly plug worked perfectly and with a little teflon tape, no leaks.
