I have an old Hayward Northstar pump. I just bought a new motor and it came with the wrong shaft seal. The motor is a Century ST1152. I think the shaft is 5/8 inch. What is the right seal kit?

Hello Christopher.  The motor shaft seal is specific to the manufacturer/model of the pump and not the motor.  The Hayward NorthStar SP4000 Series Pump has several shaft seal options, all dependant on the year of pump manufacture.  In addition to serial number identification for the manufactured year, there are visible physical differences that will assist in proper identification.  Attached please find exploded parts diagrams for the NorthStar Series Pumps.  Note the differences in pump lid and wet end appearance.  Hayward NorthStar SP4000 Series Pump (1998-2007)    Hayward NorthStar SP4000 Series Pump (2008-Current)   Hayward Tech Service is available @ 1-888-HAYWARD - please have the serial number available.

My Pump-1 1/2 Hp, Blue Haven Max, Item # SP3210X152BH was making an oscillating noise, not a steady hum, so I pulled the motor off the pump and noticed the defuser ring was on backwards. It scored the impeller, so I'm replacing some of the parts. What parts should I replace, and will the heavy duty shaft seal work with this pump. Also, can I use a larger impeller to make the pump move more water, or what can I do to make it more efficient? Can a 2 speed motor be used on this system?

A  Answered on 3/25/2020 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Richard. You will need to replace the Impeller - SPX3210C, Impeller Ring - SPX3021R along with this Heavy Duty Shaft Seal will work with your existing pump and motor. You can increase the impeller size, but you will have to replace the motor to match also. Yes, you can use a dual speed motor - SPX3210Z2MER.

Why should I purchase the heavy duty seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/17/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

The heavy duty shaft seal features carbon graphite, stainless steel, and Viton rubber. The properties of this seal contribute to the resistance of chemical corrosion. This is the best choice for salt chlorine generators or ozonators.

My original pump seal failed.

Written on 6/7/2021 by Guest

My old pump seal failed and the new pump started leaking after operating for two weeks. I called INYO help desk and they sent out this extra heavy duty pump seal. I took the motor apart, disengaged the old seal and popped in the new seal. Everything worked like a charm and I am very pleased. Thank you INYO Help Desk!
