What is Service Factor?

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

This is a " Cover All ' type manual that would reference many of their motors. Otherwise, a call to A.O. Smith at 866-887-5216 may be able to e-mail you a specif manual for your motor.

I took out my motor to replace some parts in pump, I wrote down how the wires were plugged in to the back, but cannot find the piece of paper. I know the green wire is on top, is white the next one down or is black???

Hi Jeff, For AC motors, either wire can go on either terminal. In some cases on 115 volt motors, there is a note on the connection diagram of where the hot or neutral wire is to go. This is done so that if there is an overload condition and the motor trips the protector, there will only be a shock potential between the hot wire and the protector. However the 115 volt motor will work wired either way. For 230V motors, both wires are hot so the overload situation does not apply.

Hi Amy, we will have to know the pump manufacture and model to determine what replacement seals you need. Motors are not specific to any one pump. The same motor can be used in any number of pumps.

Hi Felicia, Unfortunately, there is not an energy efficient single speed replacement for this motor, the only other option is to switch to a dual speed motor which will be the B2984T. You can let it run on high speed for high flow application and low speed for water circulation.

The pump seal is associated with the pump you have, not the motor. I would recommend identifying the pump make and model first. Then you can search on our website for the parts for that specific pump.

Hello Terry, depending on whether you have a SQ1202 motor your Run capacitor part# is 628318-308 and Start Capacitor part# is 610807-011. Depending on how old motor is I would also replace pump seal and orings if you replace whole motor.

Hi. If you currently have the SQ1202 single speed motor then the B2984T motor is the correct replacement. You can reuse you impeller if it's in good condition and get a tune up kit if one is available for your model pump.

Hi, Energy efficient motors are always better than the standard motors. If you have the SQ1202 motor you can use the Century B2843 motor as an energy efficient replacement. The frame size on the B2843 motor is larger but will mount to your pump, you will have to make a small adjustment if your pump has a motor base.

Hi, Unfortunately, Century does not have an energy efficient motor for the SQ1202 motor which has a 48Y frame. However, you can use the Century B2843 which will provide the same Total HP as the SQ1202 but it has a 56Y frame which is larger but will still mount to your pump.

We always recommend replacing all seals and especially the main shaft seal. In order to cross-reference the correct one, you will need to know the model name or number off of the front pump housing that the motor bolts to. If you are needing a replacement motor for a Sta Rite Max E Glas II 2 HP Pump then this is the correct replacement. If you need a complete Sta Rite Max E Glass II pump then that pump is no longer being produced and we suggest the PL2603 PureLine Prime 2 HP Pump as a suitable replacement.

If the old motor has ROT. CCWPE, is this defining the rotation direction and if so, is this counter clock wise? And the motor number is SQ1202. They replaced this old motor with a new USQ 1202. There is no ROT on this motor. Is this motor therefore operating clock wise?

Hello. My Sta-rite max e-glas II starts up and quits after 5 to 10 seconds. I will clean the filter and all baskets...however. If the motor is bad which replacement motor should i seek? I believe this 1202 correct?? I have just rebuilt the wet-end a few months back and all was really well.

I have a Hayward Tristar High Performance Pump with a 2.0 hp motor, 208-230 volts, 12-11 amps, Part # 7-196338-24, Serial 039103M FR Y56Y Type CP. The Pool is 15,000 gallons. Cement in-ground pool built in 2012. Original equipment. The pump seems to have frozen up, loud humming noise when the circuit breaker is reset. Pump is not turning. Circuit breaker tripped. I have a P6E6F-207FL pump (sourcing a PacFab-48 filter) with an SQ1152 motor screeching like a banshee.
1) Can I replace the 1.5HP SQ1152 motor with a 2.0HP SQ1202 motor to improve pool performance?
2) Is the GOKIT79 the right kit for SQ1202 and SQ1152?

Hi Jay, Everything you have stated is correct with a few clarifications. If you go up to the SQ1202 Motor you will still need the GOKIT79 Seal Kit and you will need to upgrade to this 2 HP Full Rate Max E Pro Impeller The dimensions and port location on the Super Max are not in the same location as the Max E Pro so it will not be a drop in replacement. Finally if you live in California you will need to go with a variable speed motor.

Thank you for your fast and considerate reply. The least risk would be to just buy the SQ1152 and GOKIT79 Seal Kit. Would you recommend the SQ1202 upgrade for the increase performance? If so, would the C105-238pdba Full Rate Impeller (normally $20 higher) also be a recommended upgrade to the C105-238peba Impeller? Thanks in advance for response.

I would only go with the 2 HP if you feel as the 1.5 HP was having trouble keeping up with the filtration needs of your pool. You will see a bump in performance just by having a new 1.5 HP motor. If you stay with 1.5 HP then you don't need to replace your impeller, only if you see signs of damage to your current impeller. If you do replace your impeller then it is important to stay with the proper sized HP impeller which matches the HP of your motor (i.e. don't go with a 2 HP impeller and a 1.5 HP motor).

Hi Justin, You will require this SQ1202 2 HP Replacement Motor Based on the year your pump was manufactured You will also need this Sta-Rite Seal Kit Pre 1998 or this Sta-Rite Seal Kit 1998 and After. I have a Sta-Rite Max-E-Pro pump (Series P6RA6G-207L with a K48N2PA105 motor, Trying determine which is the correct replacement motor. The Century 2.0 HP Square Flange 48Y Full Rate Motor - SQ1202 or USQ1202
Your Sta-Rite Max-E-Pro 2 HP Up Rate Pump - P6RA6G-207L left the factory with a 2 HP uprated motor (the USQ1202). It was replaced with the K48N2PA105 motor which is a full rate motor that generates 2.6 HP. Local pool stores can't carry the variety of motors that we have, so they often have "one-size-fits-most" motors in stock and sell you what they have available. Does it work? Yes. Does it cost you more to run it? Yes! You are spending more to run the 2.6HP motor than you would for a 2.2HP motor, which can add up to quite a bit over the life of the motor. I'll send you a quote on the more appropriate motor as well as a tune-up kit for your Sta-Rite Max-E-Pro Pump.
