What is Service Factor?

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Does the AO Smith B2983T motor come in an almond color?

Unfortunately the almond color is a trademark of Pentair and can only be used on products stamped with the Pentair logo. Even though AO Smith makes the Pentair motors, they can not duplicate the color for replacement motors.

Is a 2 HP available? Also, I currently have a remote timer that when the pump motor is energized, the AutoPilot salt chlorine is also energized. Do I need to rewire the pumps controller separate from the salt generator?

Hello Jean - You should not need any additional wiring or copper contacts. You should be able to use your existing wiring to hook up the new motor.

My current pump has a USQ1102 1HP motor and I want to replace it with a dual speed motor - and since I don't have a timer installed in the system yet, think this is a great solution. Is this the right replacement?

No the correct 115 volt dual speed motor is model number B2981T and the 230 volt model is B2980T. You also will still need a timer mechanism. Please view our Intermatic timer page to view your options.

I have 3/4 HP (SP3207EE) pump that is undersized for my pool. It turns the water over ok, but doesn't run the pool cleaner or the vacuum well. Can I use this to upgrade the motor to 1.5 HP?

Hi Matt, You can upgrade to this motor, however you will have to change out the impeller to the TriStar 1-1/2 Hp Impeller With Screw (SPX3215C). I would also recommend replacing the Shaft Seal (SPX3200SA), Diffuser O-ring (SPX4000Z1), TriStar Housing O-ring (SPX3200T) and Strainer Cover O-ring (SPX3200S) since you're replacing the motor.

I just bought this motor to replace a Max-E-Pro single speed motor. Can you tell me which impeller and tuneup kit matches this motor? Also the base of the Max-E-Pro doesn't fit this motor. Is there an equivalent? If not what should I use instead?

I have the Hayward TriStar 1.5 HP pump (approx. 8 yrs old). My motor just burned out and I'm considering the AO Smith B2983T. Is it a direct replacement? Do I need any other parts?
Also, I have a Aqua Rite salt system - does the B2983T have enough power operating at low speed to engage the flow switch to activate the salt cell?

Hi Cal, This motor can be used on the Hayward TriStar pump. In order to confirm if this motor is a direct replacement, you will need to provide the pump model or the motor part number. You will also need the pump shaft seal and o-rings which can be found on the Hayward TriStar Parts page.

Would this be the correct replacement for a single speed Century B855 2.0HP with SF of 1.10? That equals 2.2 total HP so I thought this would match it. I also run a SWG.

I'm replacing a Pentair WF-26 and believe this is the motor I need to go from a single speed to a dual speed. Currently my booster pump is wired to the load on the timer that controls the pool pump. Since this has a built in timer, I'm assuming I no longer need the pump timer, and will bypass that. Do I just wire the booster pump timer directly to source power and hope the clocks don't get out of sync and the booster doesn't run without the pool pump?

Good morning Gonzo, You can find the correct replacement parts here.Pentair / Purex Whisperflo Parts. If you are looking for a 1.5hp with a service of 1.47 than Yes, this is the motor for you. On the wiring aspect. Your booster pump is wired correctly. It is wired like that so if the pool pumps not running it will not come on. Because if that were to happen you would burn up your booster as it's not getting water.

I have a salt pool. The pump model number is P2RA5E-131L, a second box below the model number has 1C03M in it. The motor is a 1hp and now froze up, I would like to go to a 1.5hp dual speed with timer. It is 230v. Will this motor work as a replacement?

I have a Sta-Rite 1.5 HP pump model # P6RA6F-206L. My pool is salt water. The pump is three years old and terribly noisy. I'd like to consider replace the motor only and use the rest of the State-Rite systems. What is a bolt-in replacement? I'm intrigued by the latest energy efficient 2-speed pumps available. Any additional considerations would be greatly appreciated. The noise of my current pump is driving me insane.

The correct dual speed replacement motor is B982T and if you have a saltwater pool you need a saltwater shaft seal, part number 35-423-1096, to keep your shaft seal from corroding and water getting to your motor bearings.

Hi Andrew, The B2983T would be the correct dual speed replacement motor for you, this motor is a 1.5 HP full rated motor which is the same as your 2 HP up rated motor. This is a 56Y motor which means the barrel of the motor is a 1/2" wider in diameter but the motor mounting pattern is identical which allows 56Y and 48Y motors to be interchangeable, so this will be the motor you require. If you want to go with a variable speed motor then you would require the ECM27SQU 2.7 HP Variable Speed Motor if you go with this motor then you may want to upgrade your impeller to a 2.5 HP Max E Glas II Impeller to take advantage of the higher HP range of the variable speed motor.

I have an AO Smith 1.0 HP 230v pump (Cat B853) that mounts on a circular flange, and it recently went out as I was opening my pool for the summer. I'm looking at replacing it with a pump that has a built in timer, thinking maybe two speed? Suggestions? Also, what other parts would I need to make the change to two speed? The flange I have has sprung a leak so looking at replacing that as also. Lastly, how long does a typical pump last, consideration if buying one with a timer? Thanks

Hi Richard, The correct dual speed replacement motor for the B853 would be the B2980T 3/4 HP Digital Dual Speed Replacement Motor. You have a 1 HP Up Rate motor and the 3/4 HP Full Rate would be the equivalent HP to the 1 HP up rate. I will do the math to make sense of this 1 HP Uprate x 1.25 Service Factor = 1.25 True HP and the .75 HP Full Rate x 1.67 Service Factor = 1.25 True HP. The nice thing about the digital dual speed timer is that a seperate dual speed timer is not needed, so you just need to replace the motor. We would suggest a shaft seal but we would need to know the make and model of your pump, examples would be Pentair Whisperflo, Challenger, Jandy Stealth, etc..

I have a dura glas pump with 1.5 48y square frame. what do I need to change to use this 2 speed motor? impeller, defuser, etc. my dura gals was installed in 1998. if I change it will the dura glas 2 impeller and defuser fit this pump? thanks

Rick, Are you running 230v or 115v? If you are ordering the 2 speed motor with timer, you will need the replacement seals. The impeller and diffuser can be re-used as long as they are not damaged.

I have a Pentair 340039 pump on my 40000 gallon pool. Is this pump too small for the application? If the pump is acceptable, what would be the proper dual speed or variable speed motor to use? This thing is noisy and expensive to run.

Greg, The 340039 is large enough for your pool. As for a 2 speed, are you running 230v or 115v? The 2 speed motors will only run on 230v.

How do I go from a single speed 1 H.P. Motor to a 2 speed 1.65H.P. Motor.
The new motor has 4 wires the old one only has 3. It won't run on high speed the way I have it.

Marsha, A 2 speed motor that does not have a timer directly on the motor will either need a dual speed timer or a 2 speed switch installed. If you do not have either of those, The motor will only run on the speed it is wired for.

I HAVE YOUR CENTURION 1.5 HP MOTOR ATTACHED TO MY HAYWARD PUMP THE SEAL IS LEAKING WATER AND I WANT TO REPLACE IT WITH THE 201 SEAL AND ALL THE SEALS ON THE PUMP AND THE IMPELLER. MY PROBLEM IS THE MOTOR IS ATTACHED WITH THE FOUR BOLTS WHICH I TOOK OFF AND THE MOTOR WILL NOT COME OUT SO I THEN TOOK OFF THE SIX NUTS AND WASHERS OVER THE PUMP STILL I CAN NOT RELEASE THE MOTOR. IS THERE ANOTHER THING THAT I NEED TO DO PRIOR TO RELEASE THE MOTOR. I NEED YOUR HELP THANK YOU .

Hi, John. Once you've removed all of the housing bolts then pump's drive end (motor) will slide out of the pump housing. Sometimes you will need to use a little more for in order to get the drive end to break free from the housing.

Q: I have a Pentair 340039 SuperFlo High Performance Single Speed Pool Pump 1.5 hp with a service factor of 1.65. Is this the correct dual speed motor?
A: Kevin, If that is the listed HP and SF, we do not have a 2 speed motor that will work. Please confirm the the SF is actually 1.65 and that is not the total HP.
Q: I read the tag incorrectly. 1.65 is the SF HP. It looks like the service factor is 1.1.

HI, Jodi. The Century USQ1152 would be the direct replacement for MOD # C48L2PA105C5. If you would like to replace it with a dual speed motor you can use the B2982T or this B2983T which will provide a higher flow on low speed than the B2982T motor.

Customer has A.O.Smith Century Dual Speed Pool Motor w/ Digital Controller - B2983T
Out of warranty. He only operates at 3450 rpm and never uses the slow speed. Problem with the Digital Controller. Can the Digital Controller be disconnected and motor wired directly to the 220v from the Intermatic T-104 timer he is using to control On/Off times?

Also could you give us the pump make and model information, common pump names would be Pentair Whisperflo, Pentair Challenger, Jandy Stealth, etc..
